As a resident of the great state of Ohio I am required to have a front liscense plate. To my surprise my $40,000 '06 Limited didn't come with a really nice liscense plate holder on the front, just 2 small brackets. Does Toyota have a better product than this to hold the plate? If not is there a good after market one out there?

i'm in CA, and its the law to have a front license plate. i dont. i've been pulled over 3 times (2 times for speeding), and have had a couple of conversations with cops who have been looking at my car. nobody has ever noticed, or at least mentioned, my missing front plate.
also, since the front plate is a favorite target for LIDAR, i'm hoping that not having one will prevent CHP from getting a good reading on my speed before my V1 can pick it up. i'd rather have a fix-it ticket than a speeding ticket.
that being said, i tried putting the plates on when i got the thing, but i couldn't for the life of me get the damn screws in the holes. now i lost the screws and the dealer says he doesn't have any. so until i get a fix-it ticket, i'm leaving it off.

At the risk of repeating information already posted in the forum, here is what I did:dano said:
Go to Home Depot and got a piece of 1-1/2" aluminum (3 feet long was about $4). Then:
1. Cut it to length (about 11").
2. Position it so that the screws holding the plate would go above the bumper.
3. Mark and drill the holes for the bumper.
4. Screw the aluminum to the bumper
5. Screw the plate to the aluminum.
The dealership gave me screws for the bumper, but I had to buy screws for the plate itself.
Before someone asks, I'm not going to tear it apart to take pictures....it should be self-evident how to install.

I've been trying to figure out how to mount a pewter plate supporting my university, but the holes in the bumper are wider than the holes in the plate and even my license plate. If anyone has a picture of what the "bracket" I've seen mention of looks like, that would be awesome!

Where at in Ohio are you from? I'm up on the Lake just west of Cleveland. I used to always use the front plate, but on a black 4Runner, it just didn't look good... so I just took it off. Honestly, a cop really isn't going to pull you over for one, atleast around me. Now say if you were in a college town or something, they might pull you over for it just to have an excuse to see if you were drinking.
If a cop ever does end up pulling you over, it's most likely going to be a fix-it-ticket... meaning he gives you like an $80 ticket, and if you don't prove you fixed it in a certain amount of time, you have to pay the $80, but if you do prove it, you pay $0

Update. I called the dealer to see if there was a bracket available from yota, but nada....

When I began snooping around, I noticed there are two dimples to the inside of the stock holes that actually have a hidden cylinder on the back side. This is what supports the self-tapping screw required. Now, I didn't do this yet, b/c I was on my way up to Chapel Hill for a Carolina game and wanted to have the plate up there. But, if you were to use a drill and drill a hole the same size as that little cylinder on the back, you should be able to make it look decent with the front plate off and use a nut/bolt setup so you wouldn't have to use a self tapping screw.
