Front Prop shaft problem, question.

On my multi-mode 2001 I get a slight grinding when I engage the 4wd (awd) mode. This started after I came within 2 feet of hitting a golden retriever and used a two foot brake stop and slid for 6 feet. I've never greased the front prop shaft and I think this might be the issue. It's only a slight grind or whirl when I'm on the accelerator and stops when I let off. Anyone heard of this?

Also, does the front prop shaft spin in 2wd mode? Lastly my 01 front drive shaft does not seem to have a zerk fitting on the front DS ujoint closest to the front diff. It does have one at the Tcase end. Is this right for an 01?

edit / spell error.

I can't comment on the multimode operation and whether the front driveshaft spins while not engaged (My 96 does not) but I can on your concern about the front driveshaft having the zirk on the Tcase side. That is normal....should only be one on the driveshaft and one on each ujoint.

Ok but I'm not seeing a zerk fitting on the ujoint closest to the front diff. I'm puzzled.

Could be a couple possibilities here I guess.

Zirk is broken off or removed. Might have to clean it well to see.

Or the ujoint was replaced with a non greasable type.

Thanks for the information. I'm hoping the front DS just needs some grease. If not my next idea would be to change out the gear oil...
