So I emailed Zuk, the regear guru, asking about getting my rig re geared and rear locker added and got a few questions. I guess the 97 has a cast iron front clam shell that he doesn't work on, and he recommends a Detroit locker in the rear with the regear. How road friendly is the Detroit? Finally, what are my options for the front then if he can't do it? He recommended JustDifferentials.com but I'm having hard time finding what I need for a front regear. Any help is appreciated!

ECGS has an exchange program. You buy the front diff assembly from them in the gear ratio you want and the type of locker you want and they ship it to you. Then you swap out your diff and mail the core back to them.
Great service, great warranty and your down time is minimal.

Zuk is just saying that HE doesn't work on the front diffs for our vehicles, that doesn't mean you can't get it done somewhere else. Alot of people don't like the front diff on the 3rd gen's because they are a b!tich to work on. I picked up a spare front diff to have regeared to limit my downtime, I also picked up a rear elocker diff that I need to get regeared as well. So once I put the new gears in I just have to pull the old diffs and put in the new ones...easy breezy.
Call ECGS if you can't find an extra front diff to use, I would strongly suggest you at least pull the front diff yourself b/c the labor you'll pay someone else to do it will suck.

I was going to remove them both myself and take them to him. I emailed him and waiting for a reply now. I guess you are from ECGS? What would you recommend?

x2! It's easy, all you need is a press (for bearings), a dial indicator (for backlash), and a micrometer (to measure shims). The first re-gear I did was in my Tacoma and it was waaaay easier than people think it is! I've done a few (not on Toyotas) since then and they just get easier.
