I have an 01' SR5 with 72,000 miles and free from the dealer (due to a mess-up), I got new front rotors and pads... but for the future, I will get the cross drilled and ceramic pad set-up from burtmanindustries.com. Definitely will be well worth it since the OEM system is underpowered for our 3rd gens. Especially those who have upgraded wheels and tires.

Glad they took care of you. Yea, the setup I have works well for the next time you need new stuff. : )

yea i just turned my rotors about 2 months ago and it seems to come back worse the harder i brake. i feel like on my 4runner it happens cause my tires are so big and so heavy that my stock brakes cant balance it evenly when braking fast from high speeds. the less people in the car the worse it shakes.

haha i just found out today why my rotors were warped, because i wash my car soo much. Yea, when im putting the cold water on the hot brakes it warps them, MYTH BUSTED !!

That could be one explanation but it's pretty well documented (at least on Toyota forums) that the 3rd gen rotors are too small for the weight of the truck, and thus warp easily.

This also occurred for Tundras and Toyota decided to beef up the Tundra rotors.

Ok, the new set of brakes that the dealer installed for free have warped. I got the pulsating brakes back after only about 1000 miles. Going back to the stealership tomorrow to see what else they can do for me before I contact Toyota USA in regards to poor service.

Ok, the rig is @ the stealership today. TOLD them I do not want it back until the problem is 100% resolved, which should have been to begin with.

I will keep everyone posted.

p.s. Would this be a good time to contact Toyota USA ?

Ok, got a call from the stealership late yesterday afternoon. Seems that the rear brakes were out of round. They changed the shoes and drums as well as re-doing the front rotors and pads. Stated they test drove it for miles (no worries, they said they will fill my gas tank) and experienced no vibrations or shimmies. They were unable to pinpoint though what was causing the warpage.

Hopefully this will be the last time and the brake problem has been corrected.

Ok fellas, now i need help.

I picked up the truck yesterday. Between the dealership and the highway I use to get back to work, it is only 2 traffic lights and a max speed of 45. Stop and go from there, I experienced no problem. Once on the highway, I hit speeds of 70+mph and then approach the exit and BOOM - PULSATION in the pedal again. WTF!?!?!?!?

I get off at my exit. Do a little stop and go with all the traffic lights I experience and I observed brakes are good at 50 mph or less and coming to a stop. But If I am in excess of 50 mph and coming to a light or slowing down for traffic, that pulsation occurs.

Ok, as much as I know about brakes and i do not see any one else posting problems on the forum, THERE IS DEFINITELY something wrong with my braking system. With new rotors and pads in the front and new drums and shoes in the back (all replaced under warranty), why the heck is there still a PULSATION coming to a stop?

A) Who the hell test drove this vehicle and didn't notice it?
B) Did they even test drive it?
C) Do I now call TOYOTA USA to complain?
D) Does anyone know if this can be the ABS system, or any other component of the 3rd gen braking system i.e. brake assist feature, master cylinder pump etc?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is the biggest reason for the warping rotors. the reason they are so small is that toyota needed to meet a federal weight requirement... so the rotors are one place they saved weight. but as a result our rotors warp.

update

Called Toyota USA and the region's rep met me at the dealer today. I did a test drive with the head service guy and he felt it. They will be replacing the rear drums and shoes and checking the fronts again.

They did suggest me using the TRD brake system. We'll see if they can get the cost approved. Warned me that they are a little louder though.

So we shall see. In the meantime, I am driving a loaner car PRIUS. Interesting little vehicle. Got a lot of pep for a hybrid car.

Anyways, will keep you posted.

Got him back

Got the 4Runner back this morning. Spent 2 days at the dealership. Here is the outcome:

New front brake rotors and pads
New rear drums and shoes

Test drove vehicle and so far so good.

Let's keep our fingers crossed.

BTW: If anyone experiences problems with their Runner, do not hesitate to call Toyota USA. They have been more than helpful and very accomodating to my needs.
