front speakers in a 97 sr5

how hard is it to replace the front speakers in the doors on the runner? my sister blew the drivers side one out, so i figure i may as well replace both of them, also how hard is it to replace the head unit, and which speakers do yall like? i was planning on going with an HD radio from wally world... not looking to spend a ton on speakers though....

I wouldn't call the replacement hard, but its not exactly a direct swap either. Some have had good luck and not really had to do any modifying at all but it kind of depends on the speaker. I have 6.5" polk MOMOs and they didn't want to fit in the stock bracket at all. I had to do a lot of cutting on the stock bracket. Removing the head unit is really simple. Search for a write up because its a lot to type for me to explain to you how to do it.

I have always thought that Infinity makes a very good speaker for a good price.
 
Forget Walmart. Garbage. Get it from Crutchfield.com. They will get you EVERYTHING you need to set everything up right. Instructions, harnesses, mounting hardware, and tech support all included. I always get my stuff from them.
 
I got pioneer 6.5 component speakers that came with seperate tweeters and crossovers and they fit perfectly in the stock brackets with no cutting. The tweeters fit in the stock location as well with no mods
 
The HU isn't that hard to get to.

Going with Crutchfield for the HU is a good idea. They are really helpful.

Are you going to amp the speakers you buy?

Kappas might be a good choice also.

HU looks ok. I'm not a big fan of JVC.
 
Crutchfield is a good place to research but their pricing is horrible! I would research what you want on Crutchfield and then look else where on the internet to purchase. I have bought several HU's, sub's and amp's through Ebay with no problems what so ever after having researched else where. Bottom line don't get screwed on the price by Crutchfield!

I would trust Crutchfield more than ebay when buying electronics. I've bought some bum stuff on ebay and you really can't do anything but leave a negative feedback. Whooptie doo.

Crutchfield's prices are very competitive, IMO. You have to factor in that they ship everything with all of the hardware needed. You can buy the same speakers at Circuit City or ebay, but they're going to charge you extra for the harnesses and mounting brackets. Plus, no tech support or instructions.

I'll also vouch for their customer service. I bought some speakers from them that said would fit in my old Integra. When I got them, they would not fit properly (too small of mounting points). Called them up, they went through some troubleshoots, but to no avail. He said he'd send out some other speakers of my choice with a 2-day express delivery. He even upgraded the speakers (they were $10 more expensive) at no charge. I also just put the old speakers in the return box with no shipping costs to me. Try that with any ebay vendors.

Bottom line, better to go with Crutchfield than take chances with a questionable product on ebay. (and no, I do not work for Crutchfield).

From my experiences I would only get the HU from Crutchfield. It's very nice because they give you the harness and a write up.

I agree jamess in that ebay is much cheaper. I would just buy the speakers on ebay. As long as you buy from a power seller everything should be fine (knock on wood).
 
I guess I have been lucky. Over the course of several years I have bought about 3 HU's 2 amp's and 1 sub from Ebay and have had zero problems. They all came new and in the box from sellers with high ratings. I guess clemson is right about knock on wood with Ebay!

hey everybodys got the rite idea use crutchfield for reference buy online or from wally world I'm an MECP installer you can get all the stuff you need from wally but if your not sure of yourself as far as doing the install alot of places install free with the purchase.
door panels are easy just take your time and dont jerk on them to hard also check out www.onlinestereo.com there prices are great. and usually ship free
 
Crutchfield's prices are not that good, but their customer service is top notch. Sometimes that is worth a lot more than the amount you can save on the purchase.
 
only reason i said walmart, is my neighbor installed a HD radio from walmart into his moms volvo, and it sounded really good, and it was a good price. as far as customer service goes, his wife works there, and she is the one that deals with customers who need to bring things back, so if i have problems with it id have no problem returning it....:D
i wonder how this head unit is, i like that its the size of the stock HU, and it looks pretty cool....

FWIW, I have bought a total of 4 HU's off of ebay and 3 sets of speakers. If you buy from businesses with good feedback then what is the difference rather than dealing with crutchfield?? I agree that their customer service is good, but I'd rather pay $60 or $70 less personally. Also, it's nice to get the harness and dash kit at the same time, but with any competence level you can search and buy that stuff on ebay also and still save quite a bit of money.

Of the 4 HU's I have bought off of ebay, 3 have been perfect units, as described, brand new and in the box, and shipped quickly. 1 was a store demo (supposed to be new) and the box was damaged. I contacted the company and they apologized, sent me a pre-paid shipping label so I could send it back, and they sent me the brand new head unit I ordered all with only about a 5 day turn-around.

Buy from wherever you feel most comfortable by all means, but there is a good number of posters on this board with great experiences and NONE with bad.
 
That HU looks super ***** to me, but maybe I'm being harsh.

I would personally just stick with the stock speakers instead of getting those Boss Audio ones.

your head unit is called a double din if you buy a regular din size hu you will need a install kit I.E. black plastic that fills in the gaps around the opening and centers the hu and secures it to the dash and they are availible at wal mart and if you got the hook up why not buy there they have sony and pioneer stay away from dual and anyother off name good luck
 
I am not opposed to people buying stuff on ebay or craigslist or whatever. For ME, I will not buy from ebay again. Even with the super seller ratings, people have gotten bum products and gotten screwed over. I just do not want that hassle again. I really don't see that much of a price difference at all. Plus, I KNOW the company that I'm dealing with. If I really am paying a bit more for the same product, I am still fine with it. It's worth it to me for all of the benefits I mentioned above.

Oh, I also don't take my cars to Jiffy Lube, Wal-Mart, or any other questionable shops. I have a trusted mechanic who probably charges a little bit more, but it's still worth it to me.
