Front suspension issues, frustrations and disappointment

I have had my '15 TEP for a little over 18 months and about 26,000 miles. Only "modification" is a set of Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires in stock P265/70/17 size. So I think we can call it stock. Including the OEM times these are the 3rd set of tires on the truck. It had Cooper Discoverer AT/3 on it from 10,000 to 25,000 miles.

From about the 5,000 mile mark I have been dealing with steering wheel vibration in the 55-65 MPH range. I know this is not a new topic by and stretch. I have read through what seems like an infinite number of post on the vibration issue and I have tried just about every fix you can imagine. I can’t even remember how many times I have had this thing re-balanced, including several Road Force balances and 3 sets of different tires and nothing seems to help. Toyota service department can never reproduce the issue so they will do nothing except balance and rotate. So helpful.

New over the last month or so I have been dealing with an entirely new set of issues. First the alignment was off, hard pull to the right. So I do what seems like the correct thing and bring it in to the dealer for an alignment. This was a paid service not under warranty. I probably would have got the same end result if I had simply driven in to some curbs. 2 days and 3 trips to the dealer later and the alignment is worse than it has ever been. Now I have the service rep telling me it’s all in spec and they don’t know what’s going on. At this point frustration kicks in and I take it to a local shop who magically is able to fix the alignment for another $100 out of my pocket.

I also had this shop replace the tires a week or so later in hopes of resolving the shaking steering wheel. And miracles happened, no more shaking no more pulling. Life was good, happiness was had.

Well that lasted for about 2 weeks. I started noticing a slight clunking sound coming from the front end when braking and backing out of parking spots. This got progressively worse over about a weeks’ time. Fearing one of the front wheels was going to fly off I made the dreaded trip to Toyota again. Takes them about 4 hours to figure out the driver’s side front LCA bushings are shot and the whole thing needs to be replaced. Next day the parts come in and are installed. No more clunking at all, sounds good as new. I get 1/4 mile from the dealer and realize the alignment is pulling to the right like a champion again. It’s too late to go back to the dealer so I head back the next day. Takes them 6 hours and multiple attempts to get it to hold the correct alignment. Techs seem mystified as to why it won’t stay aligned but they eventually get it worked out.

But wait there’s more. 2 days after the LCA/alignment is resolved and now its back. Nice loud clunking sound but this time if seems to be coming from the passenger’s side. I am currently waiting on a call back from the Toyota service rep to see what genius idea they come up with this time.

So I'm starting to think this is not normal behavior. But that just might be me.

This truck is my DD, does about 60 miles on the highway back and forth to work. Been to Rausch Creek once for the 101 class, not exactly extreme off road and about a dozen trips to the beach here on Long Island.

This vehicle has spent more time in the shop then every other vehicle i have owned, combined over the last 20 years. I bought the Toyota over a domestic product specifically because of its reliability record. To say I am disappointed is an understatement.

Sounds like the issue may be more the dealer then the truck. Although the truck may have an issue, I think the dealer is not diag/servicing it correctly causing more headaches.

Can't help you with any answers, but I've also started to get the intermittent vibrations over about the past 6 months. Tires have been road force balanced three times, and it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

I recently drove from NJ to NC and back. All the way down, truck was perfectly smooth, no vibrations at all. All the way home, varying degrees of vibrations between 60-70 mph.

My suspension is also completely stock, and the truck has about 44k miles.

So far the balancing has been all I've tried. Next step will likely be new tires, but I'm hesitant to spend close to a grand on tires when I don't know for sure if that is the problem.

Doubt there was ever anything major wrong with your truck.... Probably just some loose LCA bolts plus some bad tires and alignment.

I would look for a different dealer. It's almost impossible to find a good one, but better than banging your head against the same wall every time.

Just a quick thought.

44k on the original tires... seems like you are most likely dealing with a tire issue and it is near time to replace anyway. Try rotating more frequently.

They aren't the original tires, they were put on by the dealer I bought the truck from about a year ago. They only have about 12k miles on them.

Granted, the dealer did put on the cheapest tires possible - they are some Cooper sub-brand. I'll be happy to replace them with something better, I just have a bad feeling that it won't solve the vibrations completely.

I agree, I dont think there is any serious underlying problem either. Finding a new dealer is the problem. There are plenty of them around here but almost no way to tell who is good and who is horrible. I love Yelp and Google reviews, everyplace is either the greatest thing since the beginning of the universe or will make your eyes bleed, almost no in-between.

I am almost convinced at this point that if you have a 4Runner that likes to vibrate it's just going to do it no matter what you throw at it.

The problem I have with mine is its not consistent so its very hard to troubleshoot. Dealer even suggested swapping the wheels and tires from a similar 4Runner to test it. I told him sure but I would need them for a couple of days to be certain. They were not willing to let me keep them that long.

the clunking i had around 40k on my kdss equipped trail was my sway bar bushings.. i replaced them around 45-50k.. i replaced all of them up front and it went away. here i am about 40k later in miles and i'm starting to hear the clunk again.. so i'm just gonna replace my front sway bar bushings again and if history repeats itsself, that'll do it for another 40-50k.

i think when Toyota designed/r&d the KDSS for the GX's i don't think many of those owners back then took it off road.. i think the offroading puts a lot of stress on those bushings/components. now translate that to a cheaper version vehicle that people are more-so going offroad.. and a few issues with it have arose. if bushing for me is all that it is, i'm content with that.. but either way.. try replacing your sway bar bushings first up front for that clunking.

I have a 2016 SR5. Had annoying vibration with stock wheels/tires. Switched out tires and vibration was better but still not great. Recently swapped out OEM wheels and got the TRD pros. Voila... ZERO vibration. Feels great.

My left side clunks too under a specific circumstance. Usually a quick down drop turn left. My first thought too was a bushing. I have inspected the front multiple times everything visible is solid.

A bad KDSS sway-bar bushing should not cause that bad of an alignment issue, after all it is only controlling body roll, nothing to do with toe, caster, or camber (well camber can be affected by roll but that wouldn't cause pulling to one side)

BTW driving on sand IMO is harder on your truck than just about anything else you could do to it.

Feel for you finding a good dealer service department is a trial. Getting a rear KDSS stabilizer link replaced under warranty as we speak, we will see how these guys do...

I'm at 60,000 miles. Put Toyo M/Ts (E rated) on it at 32000 miles. Yes mine vibrates especially when tires are cold. Yes mine always pulls a bit to the right. Pulling to the right and vibrating is at its worst at around 60 mph and with a head wind or cross wind......

I've learned to live with it - Tires have only worn about 3 mm in these past 28000 miles. 4Runners are just touchy about heavy, stiff front tires.

With the original p-rated tires it was smooth as silk.

Try running between 38 and 40 psig.

This is a non KDSS truck. But I can appreciate how bad sway-bar bushings could also be causing my problems.

There is a lot of undulating motion when driving on these beaches, have to keep the speed down for sure. I would think this would lead to shock wear/failure more then bushing wear. But who knows.

I have a total of 7 Toyota dealers with about 30 miles of me and everyone of them has the same 2.5 start Yelp rating. Ugh.

The wife is going to love when I tell her I need new wheels now to. Maybe I should just get them and hope she doesn't notice.

HA! Tell me about it. I called my Toyota dealer today to chat with a tech about the new lift I'm going to purchase. I ended the conversation by saying "Please don't mention this to my wife when she brings in her Highlander later this week." Lifts are easier to hide!
Where in NY are you? I go to Johnstons Toyota in Monticello, NY. I love this dealership.
It's the only one I will go to.

Spend 15 minutes and check the rear LCA bolts on the frame and axle. They tend to loosen up and create a clunking sound that feels like it is up front. Also check the front LCA/cam bolts. They are suppose to be way up there at about 150 ft/lbs.

Seriously doubt sway bar bushings are the problem on your truck... The KDSS things= is a different animal all together and those do wear fast and create odd noises and clunks.

The best possible defense against the run around with a dealer is learning how to troubleshoot a bit on your own.

If you take out KDSS , the suspension on these trucks is stupid simple. However, it is hard to diagnose something that comes and goes... That is never easy to pinpoint. New wheels is not a bad idea for the vibration....

As much as I appreciate your suggestion, 150 miles might be a little out of my dealer range. I live in central Suffolk County on LI. LOL.

I will take a look at the rears. I installed front and rear LCA armor out back a few months ago. At the time everything was torqued to spec (95 or so ft/lbs if I remember) plus Locktite. Don't mean it still is, cant hurt to check.

My last vehicle was a AWD Ford Fusion and that suspension was like science fiction complex compared to the 4Runners. This has been on of my main sources of frustration. Almost every 4Runner, Tacoma and FJ made in the last 6 years has this exact same suspension and still the Toyota techs seem mystified by it.

I hear you. I live in Long Beach as well as the Catskills. So the dealer is on the way for me!

One of my co-workers has a '04 4Runner and goes to the same dealer I have been going to. He swears they are the greatest thing on the planet and cant understand how I'm having so much trouble. One of the mysteries of life I guess.
