has anyone done this or tried to swap front suspension from a later 4runner, say 2003 and up, or from a tacoma? at quick glance, components look like they will fit.

Springs are a lot more compatible than Shocks. Not sure what shocks (if any) from newer generations would fit our trucks, at least in the front. Rears are more likely to work.

Springs are interchangeable in most cases but you'll have to do some homework to determine what fits best for your application.

I'm hardly the first, but I swapped in Tundra TRD springs and Bilstein 5100's. On the lowest spring perch I gained about 2" of lift. It matched nicely with 906 springs and 5100's in the rear. The Tundra TRD springs are progressive rate and have a nice ride.

Rear Tacoma shocks definitely won't work but I have 04 Tacoma front springs. I am curious if the Tacoma Billstien struts would have been better paired with these springs.

the front shocks won't fit as they're too long. the coil springs will fit and will give some amount of lift since the 2003-2009 and 2010-current are a bit heavier than the 1996-2002 4Runners.

The TRDP front coil springs will match the Bilstein 6112 shocks, not the conventional smaller diameter shocks.
