Front Turn signal lights keep burning out

Hello,

I keep having my front turn signal/daytime running lights burn out. I just had both replaced and they have both failed again (one a few weeks ago, and another today).

It's been going on for a couple of months. I noticed the problem after I had an alpine radio installed and then removed. Do you think that had something to do with it?

Anyone got any advice? All the other lights work fine.

Did you have them replaced by the dealer? If so bring it back, there may more of an issue than the bulbs. You said you had the stereo installed, then removed? So its not in the truck right now? I cant see why a stereo would effect your turn signals, but I guess it depends on who did the install for you.

I seem to recall that Toyota sells different bulbs for trucks that have the DRL option. I'm in a bit of a hurry, but I think I remember reading about that in one of the DRL threads... Maybe someone sold you the wrong bulbs?

Yup, the trucks that had DRLs installed from the factory run a different bulb. If you had swapped out the non DRL relay for a DRL relay, the bulb was specifically designed for the extra output. I've been running with the added DRL relay and so far the bulbs have held up but the life has yet to be seen for me.

So you had ur DRL installed? I had my installed after I got the car. If anyone remembers the picture i posted, but does the "DRL" logo next to the "Koito" logo on the lens of the lights mean DRL ready or something?

The only problem is that my truck doesn't have the bulbs/plug that was designed for the DRL equipped vehicles. The regular bulb still works, but wasn't designed for the lights to stay on all the time so the bulb may go out faster.

Well, hope they won't. The 4R might even beat my GX. Both of my DRL bulbs on my GX have burned out! But only once per side. :gaptooth:

Does anyone know the type of daytime running light that toyota puts in the 4runner?

The dealership offered to replace them but it was 15 dollars a bulb, so I just rolled my eyes and said no thanks.

I'm thinking maybe get it off of ebay or an auto store.

I too am wondering. I did the DRL relay swap to enable DRL and the old stock bulbs just burnt out. However, I replaced it with the same bulb, but this means it will burn out faster than the DRL "ready" bulbs. Could someone please post a part no for this bulb?

Sorry for bringing up a old post.
I too did the DRL mod and wanted to use the dual filament bulbs so it will last longer. However, the DRL bulbs will NOT fit the current socket because it was meant for the non-drl bulb turn signals.
However, looking at the service manual, if we were to switch the bulb socket for the DRL one, will it work? Does the DRL one have an additional wire or something special that toyota used different sockets?
Look at the picture below:
Replace #3, Socket, Bulb
w/o DRL TO THE w/DRL socket? then we can use the regular DRL dual filament bulbs.....
Any ideas??

However, I looked at the superbrightleds.com website and they said since the LEDs use a lower amount of power, it might make the blinks flash faster. (as if the bulb were burned out)

There are two ways to fix the fast blinking. You can measure the resistance (ohms) of the two bulbs (LED/nonLED) and add the difference (approx 2/3 ohms), as a resistor. Add it in series on the positive line in. You could also fix it the easy way by adding a solid state flasher relay.

I replaced my front drivers side blinker/turn signal/parking bulb twice and both times it burned out within a day.

Thanks to some advice from andrewajc I think the problem has been corrected.

Turns out the bulb was not pushed all the way into the socket. It clicked once and then I had to push REALLY hard with both hands to get the bulb seated all the way in the socket to get a second click. hopefully this helps some people like me who just aren't pushing the bulb all the way in which results in the bulb burning out quickly/shorting.

This was exactly the problem I had. The new bulb worked for a couple of days and then was out again. Luckily, mine had not shorted or anything. The contacts must have just worked loose. With the second click, it's been working fine!

(This is with the DRL option, btw.)

Me too. :redbrick: And closely inspecting the bulb that quit working within a day it doesn't appear to be burned out -- it just wasn't seated in the socket. Thanks again!

Old thread. New to me owner. Same old problem. Replacement bulb went in with one click and then failed. Will report back with two clicks as recommended.

EDIT ADD: Got the second click so bulb is now fully seated. Bulb is working.
