Hi. Sorry if this goes a little off topic but I just registered and apparently I am not yet allowed to start a new thread. I have a 2006 4runner that has been making a whirring noise for a couple of months. Its a long story, but a mechanic just looked at it and said wheel hub assembly needs to be replaced.
So I have two questions: how quickly do I need to replace. (Can I get a few weeks out of it, or am I risking a terrible breakdown?)
And does $1100 seem very expensive for the job?
My 4runner has about 158,000 miles on it.

1100 is wayyyyy too expensive, even for both.
$175 - $275 each depending on where you get it online.
Very easy to do. Really the toughest parts are getting the castle nut off (if stuck) and hammering the bearing assembly off. Other than that, not that hard of a job. If you're not mechanically inclined, find a friend to do it for you.

You should be fine for a while. and yes $1100 seems a lot for this job. I am assuming this is for one side. The wheel hub bearing can be had for $170-$175 shipped from vendors who frequent this site. NJ676? I think? and I can remember the other guy. I have bought and replaced 4 of these (i have 2 T4Rs). It's a coupe hour job. $1100 is robbery.

I watched a youtube earlier and it does seem pretty easy. Just nursing a broken collar bone for another few weeks so its not physically possible and living in a new town. Thats why I got the mechanic quote but I had a feeling right away it was BS. So as long as my family is safe driving it for a few weeks I should be good.
Someone below said I should be good for a while. Do you agree?

Yes, one side only. Thanks for the help! I am nursing a broken collar bone for a few more weeks so I can't even attempt the repair myself. So you think my wife and kids will be safe driving it that long?

New to this site and not sure y'all are seeing my replies. I definitely feel up to it but I am nursing a broken collarbone which should be good in about 3-4 weeks. So I'm mostly concerned about the safety of the vehicle for that time. My wife drives it like 30-50 miles a day on average. Of course, the mechanic scared the shit out of her just before he asked for $1100!!!
You all think we're good for a few weeks? What's the worst that could happen?

As stated your wife should be fine driving it for a few more weeks, but get the bearing done as soon as possible to avoid a "Murphy's Law" possibility, worst case is the bearing get a bit more noiser, there shouldn't be a safety issue.
You didn't say if your T4R is a 4X4 or 2WD, the 4X4 bearing is less money then the 2WD, around $175 for the complete 4X4 bearing and hub assembly, around $275 for the 2WD assembly, you can get a bearing assembly cheaper but that is exactly what you will get, a cheap bearing that will not last, so I would suggest biting the bullet and get the best.
I would suggest getting the bearing yourself ASAP to have it on hand when you can do without the T4R while the bearing is being installed and then check around for the best price for the install, even better if you can get a friend to help you out to get it installed since you're not able to do the job yourself.
There are 2 different vendors that are members here and offer top of the line bearing assemblies, one is in New Jersey, but he assembles his in his spare time and you may have to wait a few weeks because of his waiting list which could be longer than you would want too wait if you order from him, the other person is in Alabama I think and is pretty fast on getting the assemblies shipped out to you, here's a link to his website, Marion Bumper2Bumper.

I'm no mechanic but I have done a few things on car and bike. Change my oil, filters, etc, changed exhaust system... And I'm totally down to try anything when I have a friend a phone call away. But I moved out to denver six months ago and friends are still sparse.

Really it is a super easy driveway job. Took me about an hour to do both, old man moving slow. I did buy a skinny wrench for the four bolts per side.
Bought from a supplier on this forum, big laugh at the USPS which lost money on the flat-rate box they arrived in. HEAVY
As I recall, doing it the way I did vs. the dealer saved me about $1,000.

I've done 4 bearings myself (2 4runner and 2 on a GX470 which basically the same). If you can replace a brake rotor, you should have no problem. Rent/borrow a breaker bar, large socket and large torque wrench from AutoZone or similar local autoparts store. I think the first one took 2 hours being extra cautious, etc., The last one I had replaced a couple weeks ago in under an hour, maybe less - the hardest part for me was actually getting the rotor off as it was frozen to the hub.
I sourced Dorman replacement hub and bearing from RockAuto for ~$105 per side and they come with lifetime warranty so I figure if they go out, replacement is cheap and shipping was quick.

If you have any mechanical know how do it yourself! I couldn’t believe how easy and smooth mine went. I bought the whole hub/bearing assembly online for around 100-150 dollars and roughly a couple hours of my time and it was taken care of. If anything I’m sure you could buy the assembly and pay a local shop to install it for you. I think I got my assemblies from a1 auto or 1a auto. Something like that

Yeah you should be. I let mine go for a longer time and the sound was loud. Got lucky. First chance you get, you should change it out.
Broken collar bone? Hmmm, probably best if you find a handy friend, invite him over and have him help you. Feed him a good steak or something too.

Thanks a lot for the offer. I might take you up on it. I'll see about getting the torque wrench (Pretty sure I have all else I will need) and how it feels. It looks super doable for me so I think i should be fine. Good to know you're up the road if I paint myself into a corner...

Remember 2 and 4 wd's are different.
More expensive for the 2 wd, but easy, no torque wrench needed

Marionbumper2bumper took almost three weeks to get me my assembly after I was told seven days. His communication was... disappointing and frustrating. I read a thread on TW with many users saying the same thing... terrible communication, sometimes months waited for product, excuses, excuses (car accident, family emergency, blah blah), but a wonderful product. Mine should arrive tomorrow.
