frozen calipers 2005 V8

I just got the 45L service on my 2005 V8 t4r.

The dealer informed me that I had a frozen caliper,driver-side front, and I needed to replace both calipers, pads and the rotors needed to be cut.

The total cost was $1270.00

Needless to say, I was shocked (and outraged). I have a '93 4x4 p/u with 210K miles that neved had this problem, nor an earlier camry.

This has shaken my falth in the quality of Toyota. Is the above normal for a t4r withonly 45k miles? I have friends who have over 300k miles on their t4r's and have never heard of this before.

Is this a common occurrence, or is my problem isolated?

Do a search for frozen calipers and you'll have the answer to your question.

Quite a few members have had frozen calipers. Usually it's the inside bottom piston. You can rebuild or replace the caliper, the latter being a lot easier.

CJ3Flyr made a good suggestion, everytime when you rotate your tires, take a clamp and clamp down the pistons and make sure they're not siezed.

I never owned an older Gen 4Runner but it seems they we more reliable from reading the posts on here. I've been through the frozen caliper deal at least on one side. Not to hard to fix but not cheap. Good Luck!!

Happened to me too at 62K right after a replacing the front rotor and pads. 200 for a reconditioned Toyota caliper from the dealer. And they told me I didn't have to do both. This was straight from a Toyota master tech. It sucks though. You would think a Toyota caliper would last longer. Good luck

You might try to get Toyota customer service to cover it under the 60K warranty. They call it "good will" I think. 45K is just unacceptable in my book.

I was told the same thing by the dealer very recently. But they replaced the front 2 calipers under warranty. I asked them to replace the front brake pads as well while they were at it. I just ended up paying for the brake pads (C$200) and no labor. If your truck still has warranty, the calipers should replace for free.

Hopefully I dont have to worry about a brake service anytime soon now. :bravo:

My truck is an almost stock 2003 V8 with 82K miles and extended warranty.
