For sale is my 2009 Trail Edition 4Runner, with 166K on the clock. I've owned this vehicle since 2014, and in that time, it has been a fabulous, trouble-free vehicle.
This is a rare 4Runner (more on that below) that I intended to keep it for the rest of my life - I've modified and maintained it accordingly. Coming to the decision to offer it for sale has not been easy for me, but back in February I happened across a super clean example of a vehicle I've always wanted to own (2006 100 Series Land Cruiser), and in a true departure from my typical behavior, I basically impulse-purchased it. In the months since then, I've slowly come to terms with the fact that these vehicles are too similar for me to justify owning both. Adulting sucks.
What is the 2009 Trail Edition, and why is it special? It is the only 4th Gen 4runner with a factor selectable rear locker, as well as selectable A-Trac. Basically, take all of the off-road oriented features off the top trim FJ Cruiser of this era, and put them in a 4Runner. I would argue that it's the most flexible and capable drivetrain Toyota has offered, with the exception of the triple-locked 80 series Land Cruiser. Thanks to the locking center differential, you can choose 2WD High, AWD High, 4WD High, AWD Low, 4WD Low, and dial in the locking rear differential as needed - when I bought the vehicle, I didn't realize just how awesome this configuration is.
Modifications:
• Whitson Metalworks roof rack (custom, similar to Gobi Stealth)
• C4 Fabrication rock sliders
• Suspension: OME 884 (Front), ToyTec Superflex (Rear)
• JCB High Caster Upper Control Arms
• Bluetooth head unit, integrated with steering wheel controls and 4 channel amp to power factory speakers (sounds great, believe it or not - the factory stuff just needs more clean power, in my view)
• 255/85R16 Cooper ST Maxx Tires (worn 50%+, noisy)
The good:
• Pretty low mileage
• Very little rust
• Rear locker!
• Some mods
The Bad:
• Rock chips in the hood. I've dabbed some touch-up paint on to prevent rust, but you can definitely see it (pic below)
• Small crease/dent in rear hatch (pic below - was on the vehicle when I got it)
• Scrapes on front bumper cover (pic below)
• Current tires are worn >50%, I'd estimate, and are pretty noisy at speed.
