SOLD

For Sale: 1999 Toyota 4Runner, 5 speed manual, 4 wheel drive, rear locking differential
Miles: 203,000 actual miles. Odometer does not display actual miles. The gauge cluster failed and the previous owner had it replaced at 71,875 miles. Therefore the actual miles is the current odometer reading plus 71,875.
Location: Bakersfield, CA
EDIT: Price reduction $6,000
Description: This is an ultra-rare 5–speed manual transmission, four wheel drive, with factory rear diff lock.
Contact info: You can PM me here, or email me at [email protected].
I made that email address from when I sold my last truck.

The truck is in overall really good condition for is age. It is probably one of the cleanest out there for sale right now. I have taken really good care of it and it has always been garaged since I have owned it. I have owned it 4 years and have done quite a bit of maintenance to it that I will list below. I do not have much history on the car from before I bought it.

Interior is about an 8 out of 10. There is a plastic trim piece on the passenger seat that is broken.

Everything in the truck works like it should including:
• Power windows, even the rear one in the tailgate
• Power locks
• Keyless entry, I have one remote
• Sound system
• Heated mirrors
• Window defoggers

Maintenance history:

Mods:
• Sound system head unit from Scion, with iPod auxiliary cord. Model T1809 this unit puts out a lot more power than the factory Toyota head unit and is plug and play meaning no wires were cut behind the unit.
• All the door speakers were swapped with either Alpine or Pioneer brand speakers ( I can remember, but I will provide a picture of one)

Known Issues: This is a 17 year old car and it has a few known issues
• Involved In minor accident that damaged the rear tailgate and rear bumper. They have been replaced with OEM parts. I will provide a picture of the damage below
• Minor rock chips and scratches, nothing excessive
• Pretty big door ding on driver front fender
• Transmission sometimes has a rough shift to second gear. This is common on these 4runners as well as the Tacoma’s of the same year. EDIT: please see my description of this in the thread below, this is not a serious issue just a minor annoyance
• Valve cover gaskets leak a small amount of oil, maybe one drip per week in the garage. I replaced them a while ago, but they started leaking again about 10,000 miles after the repair.
• Odometer does not display actual miles. See the description of “miles” at beginning of post.
• There is a plastic trim piece on the passenger seat that is broken.

EDIT: There have been many request for pictures of frame rails and suspension components. I assure you this truck almost no rust pictures are provided below

I am providing a picture of the sway bar mount as this is a common place for heavy rust due to the "bowl" it makes to collect debris and water. As you can see mine is rust free.

These are the upgraded speakers in the doors. I don't remember if they are Pioneer or Alpine brand.

Picture of the accident damage. Rear door and bumper were the only parts damaged. Replaced with OEM parts from a 1999 4runner of same factory color so the paints match. Paint is even the same age.

How does a manual trans have a rough shift into second? I've never heard of that before.

The notchy shift from first to second occurs when the oil is cold on the first few shifts, after it has warmed up everything works fine. It's hard to describe exactly what "notchy" is, but i'll give it a shot. It is a sensation felt in the gear shift lever when moving to second gear that is not perfectly smooth like the other gears.

Here is a thread full of people that have the same issue. It seems pretty common with this truck and I haven't heard of any failures, just a minor annoyance1st to 2nd Gear shift Clunk - TTORA Forum.

I'll check it out, dont remember any threads on here about it. Thanks!

A first to second gear "notchy" feeling is common in MOST vehicles. Nothing to be concerned about. And TBH if you're serious about buying it RJD2006 you should fly or get a train or drive to go see it and tow your vehicle back. That would be the true test to make sure it's what you want.

I'll be looking into hiring an inspector and see where it goes from there. Thanks for the response

Would you be willing to set up shipping or know an approx cost to 30360?

I may be willing to work something out. I shipped out my tacoma to an independent dealer when I sold it. I will send you a PM with my contact info.

Also, I am beginning to realize my asking price may be too high so we can work on that too.

Thank you for verifying this is a very common occurrence in these 4Runner's and Tacoma's of the same generation.

Like i said, it is a minor annoyance at the worst and i have never heard of any failures or serious problems relating to this. It only occurs for the first few shifts until everything is warmed up.

I meant to provide more of a blanket statement but you get the idea. And if it's just until it warms up I wouldn't worry.

I have had tons of request for pictures of the frame and suspension. I added a few pictures to the original post. I also lowered the price.
