FS: 3rd Gen Aftermarket Sport Hood (Scoop Insert Missing) - only $55; Central TX

The price for this aftermarket Sport hood is $55. This is a great deal! I sold the scoop insert, so it is missing from this hood. This is priced to sell quickly. You won't find a cheaper Sport hood. It is just taking up space in my already cramped studio apartment.

So obviously the previous owner painted the aftermarket hood white. It needs a repaint. All of the sheetmetal is straight - there are no dents or dings. There are some very slight depressions near the grille end of the hood where the previous owner slammed his hood shut with the plams of his hands. You can't see them unless you are really looking for them. I've noticed that these aftermarket hoods often have this defect from thinner metal being used than OEM. I don't usually buy aftermarket Sport hoods, but I have heard from several of you that want a Sport hood for less than the $350 to $400 that I sell the OEM hoods for. Here is an opportunity to have an aggressive-looking Sport hood without breaking the bank.

You will need to install the heat shield from your flat hood if you want this on the Sport hood. You may also be able to find a heat shield from a damaged Sport hood. I'm not sure that it is totally necessary, but this hood has 9 plastic discs for securing the heat shield in place.

You can get a brand-new scoop insert (with screen and related parts) from TOYOTA for about $150. A cheaper option would be salvage yards. Salvage yards often sell them anywhere from $40 to $125. Sometimes they have damaged OEM Sport hoods with good scoop inserts.

Someone has to need this hood. If you have a scoop insert you can use this hood until you find an OEM hood in the correct color (if your 4Runner is one of the 6 colors that the Sport hood was manufactured with). With some sanding and flat or satin black paint this hood would look sharp. Your scoop insert could be painted body color to contrast with the black hood. The $55 price is so cheap because this hood is taking up too much room in my studio apartment.

Shipping is difficult and expensive. I shipped a Sport hood to California and started a tutorial thread about the entire process. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/188609-tutorial-shipping-sport-hood-greyhound-texas-california.html Shipping the hood on Greyhound cost just under $150. The buyer paid me $150 for supplies, packing, boxing, and transporting the boxed hood to Greyhound. The cost for the hood itself was $395.

The project was successful as the hood arrived in Cailfornia undamaged. The supplies, including a custom box, cost just over $200. I drove to Dallas (6-hour round trip) to pick up the box. Outside of getting the box much time was spent doing everything necessary to box the hood. If you read the thread it will be obvious that I cannot do this for $150 - I lost $50 on supplies alone.

I wanted to ship a Sport hood so that I could have a better idea of the time and expense involved. Now that I have done it I know that there is much more time and expense on the "handling" side than I anticipated. I wouldn't say that won't ship another Sport hood, but it would require much more than a $150 handling fee. I think it would be more than most would be willing to pay.

They didn't make Sport hoods in Desert Dune. You will only find OEM Sport hoods in blue, red, silver, gray, black, and green.
