FUBAR'd my skid royally

well, as the title says, my skid is bent pretty bad.:happens:

i pulled it off today and attempted to bend it/hammer it out but that didnt work.

guys got any suggestions? :D


i called my local parts guy and he said a front skid plate for the 2010 4runner TE (part number 51405-60220) is going to cost me $498.40 plus taxes which works out to around $560.:roadkill:


if i can't unbend it or find someone who can unbend it for me i guess i'm stuck ordering a new one. :crybaby:

can anyone help confirm that this part number is for the front skid plate? (the one just below the engine).

i took a bet that i probably shouldnt have.

i drove over one of those parking lot dividers in 2wd and did the up and over.

after the front wheels cleared it dipped and nailed the skid. skid did its job and the mounting points all are intact.


i might go to town on it with a sledge and a 2x4 and see if i can pound it out.


i dont think bud or anyone else will be releasing anything soon. i've got to get this fixed/replaced before i leave the country so i'll try to hammer it out with a bigger hammer.

if you know someone or have access to a torch, a little bit of heat might help as well. use a lot of time and patience. as long as its not too ganked, you should be able to get it mostly straight.

ladywolf, i've thought about heating it up with a torch but i'm afraid that'd ruin the temper/heat treatment on the steel and make it weaker.

that bent area should be straight IIRC
 
How tall was the parking lot divider? I'd hold off on Urban off-roading till you get some decent skids, lol.

Edit: Last I heard from bud, he was just needing to get his hands on a new 4Runner to start fabbing some skids up. So if anyone is local to him, give him a ring. If I was closer, I would have visited already, let him use my rig for mock-up, but unfortunately, I'm like on the other side of the country.

it was just one of those standard parking lot dividers. couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 inches?

i'm gonna pull the skid again in a few hours and try to hammer it out again. i didnt have a dead blow so i was using a ball peen. gonna go pick up a 27oz dead blow and hope it has a greater impact.

wait... i'm confused. if it couldn't have been >7" then how did you do damage? i thought the clearance of the 4Runner was a good >9" alone so that doesn't add up. What am i missing here?

Wow... I've driven over sidewalks in mine and I never came close to touching bottom. You crazy Canadians must have insane parking curbs, considering the ground clearance is 9.6 inches with stock tires.

Can you take a picture of your skid plate head on from the front? Wondering what the difference is since it looks very similar to the SR5

i did it in 2wd.

it took a bit of effort to get up and over and it seemed to have bottomed out.

back with the dead blow now and some beer. wish me luck. :roadkill:

edit: i think speed was also a factor as well.

well folks.

thx to mike's suggestion its back to about 90-95% original. i can live with that and it sure was better than spending $560 on a new skid. When bud built releases skids for the 5th gen i'll replace the busted up skid until then this will do.

tools used:

10mm socket
12mm socket
gloves
dead blow hammer
tremclad rustreformer black spray paint.


one thing i screwed up though, i over torqued the front right screw which holds in the skid plate and now it just spins in place. wont go tighter but also wont come back out.


any suggestions on how to fix this? i'm not sure if its the threads on the bolt or the threads on the frame that got damaged. its still held in by the other 3 which are fine so i'm not too worried. worst case scenario i'll get the dealership to fix it next time i go in for an oil change but i'd like to know incase its easy to do.
 
It won't be easy to fix if the threads on the hole are stripped. Let the dealership fix it, they have the tools and the experience.

im guessing what happened is that the spot welds holding the nut on the otherside snapped when i over torqued it. i'm not too worried since its still held in by 3 other bolts and i wont be doing major off roading for a while.

its hard to see a comparison from the photos but its back to being mostly flat now except for one part where it pinched.
