Fuel door cable replacement

The fuel door release cable on the 96 4Runner we just bought is broken (looks like some mongrel pried the door open with a screwdriver at some point in the vehicles history). I have a replacement cable ordered. Has anyone installed one of these? Is it doable without a major hassle, like dissasembling the entire side of the vehicle?

Same thing happened to mine. Someone pried the fuel door open. How did that damage the cable though? On mine they bent the little arm on the fuel door that catches the latch. I had to bend it back and it works fine.

Looks like the end of the cable that sticks out and catches the latch on the fuel door is broken off. I assume normally that sticks out and holds the door closed until you pull the release on the dash, but I haven't looked at a functioning one yet to verify.

The door is just held closed with some magnets I stuck on it now...

fixed the cap and broke the door

Magnets, how'd you do that. My 4Runner cap would not turn at all. completely stuck on. I was going to drill it out but, aaaahh eehemmm booooomm!

so I used a large pair of pliers and a hell of a lot of force but finally i got the damb cap off. and along with it was a whole bunch of little plastic pieces. the cap no long clicks at all. the cap no longer gets stuck at all.

the little weak plastic tap the holds the door shut is now broken off.
OMG I so badly miss my 99 runner. This 2004 model is bad luck.
