Gasoline Petrol Tank Door Self-Open Spring

After 28 years of service, the gas/petrol door didn't open when I pull the gas door opener located under the dash. Later, I asked my daughter to pull the opener while I press the corner of the door to pop open.

The culprit was the plastic spling like tab was broken after 28 years of service! I then resort to following fix with a spring removed from a AA battery compartment.

Use a pick to CAREFULLY pry the black plastic piece at the hinge rod. The plastic will pop up and then SLIDE it away from the hinge to release it. Then clean and mount the spring with some JB weld.

Yes they are available for a little over $5, less for ordering online but with shipping it would be more.

The original one on my '01 recently failed, so I ordered three springs and replaced them in my fleet ('97, '01, '02).

First thing I snag from junkyard cars, I have a few in my ashtray just in case!

I did not look into buy this tiny part thinking it is discontinued.. I'll buy a new and keep it as a spare.
Guess I am watching too many bush mechanic shows!
