fuel door won't close

Hope someone can tell me how to fix the fuel door (2000 Limited). I went to gas station, flipped the lever, and door won't close, the catch remains in.

Then I was playing with it, trying to push it in and out, and it went further in, to the point that I cannot feel the end.

Also, I didn't notice this before, that the lever inside will click when I push it back to place.

FIXED. The clicking noise was the lever hitting the bolt on the electric brake control. It was catching on it and not allowing the fuel door to work. Just had to remove the bolt.
Whew, simple fix, now I can wash it , without losing the fuel door.
