fuel filter help

I've been doing a big overhaul on my 2000 4runner, getting ready for a road trip. Tonight, I tried to swap the fuel filter. The new one went on easily, but i couldn't get the gas tank side to not leak! I tried taking off and reseating the fuel line about 6 times. finally, I tried the old filter and it was leak free on the first try. I can't see anything obvious on the new filter. It flare inside looks the same as the old one. Any advice on getting the fuel line to seat properly?

Did you try bolting down the filter before doing the lines? Mine leaked when I first did it, I just cranked down really hard on it and it hasn't leaked since. I'm thinking a little Teflon tape couldn't hurt if you really had to.
 
Teflon tape wouldn't really do anything to help in the long run.

What I found helped (not sure if you do this already), but when you're tightening the nut down, make sure to keep "pulling" the line out as you tighten the nut down so that it sets itself straight and doesn't get hung up on threads and not seat on the "mating surface" of the filter and nut.

Sorry, hard to explain and I'm at work so I might not have typed this super clearly.
 
Yeah, you're right, Teflon tape wouldn't help considering the mating surface is on the flange, don't know what I was thinking. Now that I think about it though, I do remember my lines had a residue maybe paint from the old filter I had to clean off, so make sure your flanges are clean and smooth.
 
I am using a 14mm flare nut wrench. I will give it another try today. it's odd to me because the leak is not small. it pretty much pours out. I wonder if the nut is somehow bottoming out without pressing the tube into the flare.

I hope you are using TWO wrenches. It is difficult, frequently impossible, to tighten those connections correctly without using two wrenches: one on the nut and one on the filter body. This doubles the torque applied by only one wrench (assuming your hands are equally strong.)
 
I give up. Same thing happened. The new filter gushed gas on every try, but he old filter was leak free on the first try again. Clearly my new filter is f*cked. I will see if the dealer will swap it. I'm not holding my breath...

Yeah I had a bit of trouble with this at first, but really I just had to get it really cranked down and it's been fine ever since, several thousand miles later. What dealer did you buy it at? Some are pretty cool, others not so much. Persistence will pay off though, I was really happy with how great the truck ran after I did mine (placebo or not).
 
I had the same problem a couple weeks ago. Mine wasnt gushing out though, only a couple drops a minute. I used some thread sealant, which is going to suck when it comes time to change it again, but it stopped the leak.
 
where is the best place to purchase this and what brand and part number for a 1997 4runner sr5 v6? Anything else recommended to be replaced while doing this as well has 170k miles auto

This is not an uncommon situation. This has come up quite a few times over the last couple months. I did mine about a month and had the same issues. Is yours leaking out of one end, or out of both ends? Mine was only leaking from the tank side. I ended up cutting the line and putting in a new section. You can get a small section the is already flared. Then you can use a compression fitting to couple the ends back together.
