Fuel gauge acting up.

So I have been driving the car more lately but the wife has been using the 4Runner to drive to her mother. She tells me nothing. Any way. Decided to drive it on a trip from GA to KY and went to top off tank. And 6 gal later it was full and gas hand said less than half. 100 miles up the road it went to full , 50 miles later And it didn't go down. Got more gas. 6 gal. 100 more miles and stiff full. Sorry so long.
Do you think sending unit is going bad?

I have similar problem but no slam dunk answers.

There are four parts, the sender and suction pipe, both inside the gas tank.
The Number 3 Printed Circuit Board (this may be called a "plate", also)and the fuel gauge, in the instrument cluster. The circuit board is no longer available from Toyota, bat apparently the manufacturer is willing to sell you a $39.00 part for only $200.00. It may be possible to have the PCB refurbished.

I have replaced the suction tube and sender and it still does not work. I am searching for low cost PCB out on a wreck. Big risk because PCB are fragile, so anything out of a wreck has to be suspect. But, if it is really cheap and does not work, I can send it for rebuild and still have dash board in place. Just remember to watch your odo and gas about every 180 miles. Keep posting--maybe with enough help we can figure this out--trial and error is expensive.

i dont know if the 98 had the same issue as 99s, i had to replace sending unit and get the computer work done to fix mine
