I seen someone else mentioned this and I did a search no results so here I go.My 87 runner's fuel gauge comes up to about 1/4 tank when ignition turned on regardless of fuel level.however when I bought it and was coming home the fuel light came on.Has anyone had a similar problem.Truck sat for a couple of years.

Pull the sending unit out and check it. The FSM will tell you what the resistance should be at the empty and full positions, and you can check/clean the wire wound potentiometer.

Would I have to drop the tank?

You could disconnect the connector at the tank and make the measurements when you know the tank is full and empty (or close).

And there is an access panel under the rear seat, but darn if I can remember if it's to get to the gauge sender or the fuel pickup right now, it's late and I'm tired.

The access under the seat is for the pump.I checked it today.I didn't see another access so I guess I"ll have to drop the tank to get it out.

I had an issue years ago with my first 4runner where I screwed the gauge trying to clean it and it only worked between 1/4 and 1/2 tank. It could be the gauge.
