Fuel Injector Service

I drive a 2014 T4R with 77k miles on it. Took it into the dealer last week as I got the tabata airbag recall notice. They replaced the part, and the service advisor recommended the fuel injector service for $250. I declined.

Is this necessary? I've been using 87 grade fuel since day one. Once in a while I do feel that the truck stutters when I hit the gas.

what fuel do you use ? 87 top tier fuel is required. look up what gas has these additives that keep injectors clean and reduces combustion chamber deposits.. typical fuels I use are shell/exxon/mobil/irving .

you use no top tier fuels put some techron fuel injector cleaner with the combustion chamber additives to do this type procedure.

you may have to do this a couple of times on your fill up..
post back how the engine performs .

Use a large bottle of Techron or BG44K complete fuel system cleaner will probably give you same results.

It may be snake oil, it may be useful. I did it as cheap insurance and plan to run a can through every 60K.

Use a bottle of Chevron and a tank full of 93/92 octane fuel. Fuel injection services are for tune-ups or visible carbon build up inside the throttle body.

Thanks for your replies. I will try the chevron techtron route. Do I do that once or twice, or every time for a while? I see it's 1 oz per gallon. The 4Runner usually takes 17-18 gallons when I'm really low on fuel. What's the capacity of our tanks?

Just drive. Gas already has mandatory detergents in it and the in tank sock filter keeps trash out.

I had my 2005 4Runner for 13 years and never let the dealer touch my fue system. I always ran Arco 87 gas and every 6 months ran a bottle of fuel injector cleaner with a tank of gas.

I sold that 4Runner at 240,000 miles with never an issue with the fuel system and still getting good mileage.

if you have 15 mins to kill.. i ended up watching most of his videos.. and it seems like b12 by chemtool which is readily available at walmart.. he basically concludes that the more popular fuel injector cleaners such as techron concentrate(not costco version), BG44, B12 by Chemtool and several others are all effective carbon deposit removers.

Chemtool b12 is readily available and the cheapest of the pack under 4.00 an application.

Personally, i'll wait til the peak of summer as I believe the cleaners can sizzle away deposits more efficiently w/ a hotter engine.

I've owned three 4runners, 225k, 180k and the current one has 100k on it. Never once have I ever had the dealer do a "fuel injector service." nor have I put even an ounce of fuel additive in.

Commercial cleaners are introduced at the fuel rail. They are too much for the fuel filter. Tank additives can only do so much because of this limitation.


Always buy fuel from A reputable source. Check the pump filters for regular maintenance. More important for diesel trucks. Good source can usually reduce the likelihood of water intrusion. Water can plug the fuel filter. This could start as rough idle. Some products advertise "emulsifiors ". This breaks up the water allowing it to pass through the system.


Unknown if you actually need the cleaning. Try fuel filter first.

I've always used Chevron Techron in previous vehicles. Never had an issue.
