If you've got a problem with your car, its probably not too bad of one.
I have the 4cyl, its supposed to be better with mpg but my average has been 14 since I bought it.
I just got 16.6 for the first time last fillup.
I cleaned my MAF, swapped for a K&N intake, cleaned the throttle body, and did a header swap. With all of that, it still barely budged, between 14-15 maximum.
I went over maintenance records from the woman who owned my 4Runner before me, she used nothing but shitty gasoline and shitty conventional from jiffy lube.
In order to clean out all the shit in my engine, I switched to Castrol GTX synthetic 10w30 for 7,000 miles, did another synthetic oil change a few days ago, and holy shit on a mother****ing stick.
My car is quicker, and better on mileage. On my first fill up, I got 16.6 mpg for the first time ever.
Now I need to swap out the rest of my exhaust (clogged catalytic converter, 2 exhaust leaks, small pipe)
So really, all I'm saying is that your car may just need some easy preventative maintenance, like a good synthetic oil change or a cleaning here or there. I got 2 mpg just from oil.
I can only hope for another 3 from exhaust.
