I have about 3,900 mi. on my 06 Sport V8 and have run a mileage check for the last 750 miles. I have stock size Revos at 35 psi and use Mobil 1 synthetic and mid grade fuel. Checking the mileage at the gas station (beginning full, tracking gallons, ending full) I am showing 18.3 miles per gallon. That includes about 200 miles towing a 1,500 lb. atv and trailer. The onboard computer shows about 18.8 mpg most of the time (I didn't reset each fill up) but does show higher or lower depending on my driving style at the moment. That is an error of less than 3% for the onboard computer. I know the consensus here has been about a 10% difference between the computer and actual mileage. I am happy with my mileage and computer performance so far. Most of my driving is interstate and some gravel/dirt roads between 5,000 and 10,000 ft. elevation. This is a great truck!

Maybe they did something in '06 to make it more accurate. I don't know for sure, but our '04 shows that 10% difference. Congrats on the truck. And welcome to the forum.

My 06 V6 trip computer overstates gas mileage consistently by 8%. This is taking into account the odometer's 2% under-report of miles traveled.
My 06 trip computer MPG is also about 10% too optimistic. Speedo/odo is dead on, as confirmed by a Garmin StreetPilot. First time I've ever had a Toyota product with an accurate speedo! (Usually they read a bit high.)
I think the problem is that it's using the fuel gauge to estimate how much fuel you're using, rather than using actual fuel injector data. There's a decent amount of fuel available while the needle is at or above Full right after you fill the tank, and I think the trip computer is unable to realize you've really used that much gas.

I have gotten in the low 20s (21 to 23) mpg while traveling on long trips at reasonable highway speeds. This is with a 4WD V6 while being driven in 2WD.
I have starated commuting 150 plus miles per day and have tried a new radical method to get better mileage, driving the speed limit, 65mph and using the curise control as much as possible. I have an 03, V8 2x4 4Runner, synthetic German Castrol Syntec 0w-30 (the real synthetic not like the other Syntec grades) engine oil, Red Line in the transmission and diff, Michelin Cross T's at 38psi and after 5 fillups (10 trips) am getting 23.25 mpg, San Diego to LA, in other words good weather. I have made 6 of those trips without touching the brake pedal while on the freeway, a game I play to try to make driving more interesting while listening to a book on CD. I drive during non-rush hour and it's not too bad.
I don't have to prove anything...Your right the computer is a piece of crap...I filled the car....drove 300 miles & filled it again & divided the gallons into the miles...not just once but several times...each tank was appx 24-25 mpg...if you think I did it wrong or dont believe me thats fine...all I know is my truck gets the mileage claimed on "regular gas" on a regular highway with hills...yup ones that go up too...not just downward hills...
