Fuel pump replacement question

Ok so I’m at my dealer right now getting the fuel pump replaced under the recall and everything I’ve saw shows they have to drop the tank. My service guy just came to get me to remove the car seat in the back seat so they could access from the top ??? When I asked he said they don’t drop the tank ???

That's pretty interesting.

I remember the late 90's chevy trucks having so many pump failures that an aftermarket company had a hatch made that you could cut into the bed of those trucks to replace the fuel pump without dropping the tank. I'm surprised that that Toyota build in some way to do this from the top. I'd hope that they're not cutting in a new access hole.

That’s not a 5th gen. I’ve had vehicles that had an access too. I’m specifically talking about 5th gens. Everything I’ve seen is drop the tank. Just want to make sure my dealer is doing it correctly and not hacking up my vehicle

That video is kinda scary in terms of what people do to their cars. Dropping the fuel tank probably only takes 15 -20 minutes. I'm not sure they saved much work.

I said it was a 4th gen. I guarantee that same hole is in the same spot on the 5th gen and they are just doing it through there. Those guys cut the hole to just make it easier to pull it up through, which is ridiculous.

My guess is the dealer has done the fix through the window enough times now.

Yeah. Super ghetto. Now there's a huge hole that isn't covered up. Dude is gonna have squirrels in his truck one morning.
 
Just left the dealership and they said they remove the backseat and carpet and go from the top. Hmm. So I’m just trying to understand if they did it the way Toyota recommended? The dealership I normally go to said no they have to drop the tank. Anyone on here know for sure what the Toyota service and repair manual says to do ????

Do you have the part numbers that they replaced?
 
Does anyone have the Toyota service manual online to see what Toyota says is the proper method??

Sarcasm is sometimes hard to detect online, so forgive me if I falsely assume you are serious. Cutting a hole in the floor is unacceptable. there is either a port to be accessed that is removable/replaceable or there isn't and the tank has to be dropped. My understanding is the tank has to be dropped on the 5th gen.

I really don't care.
 
I wonder if some models of Toyotas in the recall have a panel and some don't. The service guy doesn't know which ones do or don't, and the service manager doesn't have time to educate them or trust them to remember which models do and don't, so they just tell everyone to remove any car seats from the back and then it's never a problem.

I think they'd probably prefer empty fuel tank if possible.
 
I've deleted my 2nd row and I don't remember seeing any sort of fuel pump hatch under the carpet. Wasn't really looking for one tho.
 
If I recall they can release the electrical connection from a small hatch under the back seat. They actually need to drop the tank to change out the pump. I have a 2014 Trail and they dropped the tank to change mine out.

I've replaced my fuel pump on my 2011.

Under the rear driver's side seat, there is a small access panel that allows you to disconnect a wiring harness from the top of the fuel tank. It is impossible to replace the fuel pump without dropping the tank or cutting a big hole in the body.

ETA: 4th gen looks exactly the same as 5th gen, so if you are interested, watch this youtube video of someone cutting open the body to get the fuel pump through the cab.

This is what the access hole looks like

You have to unscrew that large round plastic piece and remove this very large assembly that contains the fuel level sender and the fuel pump buried within it.
