Fuel Pump

1995 22R-E 5-speed manual 4x4

The fuel pump is apparently on it's last leg as evidenced by the fact that the vehicle had about 2 months of intermittent difficult starting punctuated by one episode where the vehicle refused to start until the tank was tapped on with a hammer.

I'm looking at replacing the fuel pump myself sometime in the next week since the shop wants 900+ dollars to do it. I'll likely order the pump from my favorite tax-free online retailer. They have pumps available from Delphi, Bosch, Airtex, Denso, Python (remanufactured OEM), Carter, and Beck Arnley.

Anyone have any experience that would lead them to suggest which one of those might make the best replacement? Will I need any other parts for the installation, besides a fuel pump "strainer"? Any tips?

DENSO, period.
And never run Bosch parts on a Toyota.

Thanks fourwd1. I ended up finding (on a site that isn't my favorite tax-free retailer) a KYOSAN fuel pump, which I came to understand was the actual manufacturer for Toyota. I went with that one at 199 since it was only about 50 bucks more than the DENSO. I also came to read that DENSO and KYOSAN are somehow related and sometimes fuel pumps have both names on the box. Anyway, I'm thoroughly confused about that, but hopefully the KYOSAN rocks...

I also ordered an Airtex Tank Seal and an NPN fuel filter. Were those solid choices or should I cancel all that and try again?

I don't have any experience with Airtex or NPN, but (Nippon) Denso, Asin/Seco, or NGK are always a best choice for Toyota parts. All are OEM for one thing or another.

Just replaced our F-pump about a month ago. I went with a Kyosan and factory tank seal. You might consider replacing the regulator went you do this job. The ethanol and with the improved pressure from the new pump will kill any old diaphragm in an original regulator.
If you intend on replacing any of those hoses, pre-order, as the dealers will not stock the stuff. Our truck ran much stronger afterwards, started quicker as well.

Awesome -- thanks for the tips. I'll order up a KYOSAN Fuel Pressure Regulator as well. I'm not planning on replacing any hoses, but I am hoping that new fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel regulator gives this old girl some of her ponies back. She's always been a little on the gutless side, especially if I hit any hills and I wonder if it hasn't been the fuel filter/pump for the past 20k miles....

Woah woah woah. Before you go changing all those new fan-dangled parts, maybe its something simple, I bet your injector fork is stripped.

These trucks have age, miles, and miss-treatment on them which requires a few "fan-dangled parts" . You would be surprised what a few parts due for these trucks.

Check your rest fuel pressure to see how your fuel pressure regulator is doing.
