Fuel Sending Unit Replacement

Hey Dudes,

Awesome! I've been needing to do this since my fuel gauge started going haywire about a month ago.

Mine constantly crashes to E shortly after startup and the fuel light flashes. On the rare occasion it doesn't crash, it grossly over estimates the actual fuel in the tank. Hope this solves it!

Look into problems at the instrument cluster as well as the sender, very common with the '99 IIRC. I have no personal experience with it, you'll have to do the research....

Team Jake, so what was the solution to the issue with your fuel gauge,
my 99 4runner just went throught the same issue
fuel gauge dropped to the bottom, and gas light started blinking.

will that be a ground issue? or need to replace the fuel sending unit?

It is a TSB issue that should have been a recall (defective parts installed that could leave driver in dangerous situations, loss of power everything, and possibility of being stranded in extreme weather conditions), check your VIN with Toyota to see if the TSB has been performed, or if the inclinometer chip in the dash needs replaced or just the sending unit as per the TSB EL010-00 issued by toyota for certain batches of 99 -00 models years. Note if it is the chip in the dash aswell, remind toyota they need to have your milage inputed to the chip upon ordering it or you'll have 000000mi on your cluster.

Replacing the sending unit according to the TSB [MENTION=564148]Malcolm99[/MENTION] cited should solve it. When I was having this issue a few years back, it eventually just went away and I didn’t have the issue for years, I didn’t really do anything, it just went away by itself. I should note that I did swap in a F150 tank with a new sending unit a while back, and since then I’ve never had this issue.

If it’s a persistent issue for you, I’d replace the sending unit first and see if that fixes it before touching the dash circuits.
