fuelpump fubar?

My 99 Runner didnt want to start today after driving around earlier in the day without any problems. Stalled in my buddies driveway I try to start it several times - no go. Seems like a fuelpupmp issue - we tap on the tank lighly with a plastic pipe while turning it over and varoom - it starts. I drive it home and shut it off and proceed to start itwithno problems - 6 or so times. fuel pump? shes got 200 000km - is it time for pump?

heres my next question - do i need any specialized tools to replace the pump? can i do it off ramps or does it need to be on the hoist to drop the tank? unfortunatly i just filled it up - drain the tank too? any tricks to this fuelpump replacement procedure would be appreciated Forum Experts.

Thanks Guys.

I don't think it would require any special tools, but I've never dropped mine. I do know it's just held on by a few bolts. I'm sure it would definitely be easier if you drained it. You have to disconnect the fuel filler hose anyways so I would stick a garden hose right in the back of the tank and try not to get a mouthful. Other than that, watch out that you don't pull on any wiring and rip it out of the top when you're letting it down.

That said, I don't imagine it would be a fun job, so I would rule out what you can like plugs/wires/coils/injectors 1st and test your fuel pressure so you don't go pulling your tank for nothing. Could be a bad fuel pressure regulator also. The tap you did on the tank is a sign, but I would just make damn sure it's not a coincidence.
