Full flush & change ATF

I just bought a 2002 3.4L Sport Edition 4Runner.
I am about to change all fluids.

If I flush out all the ATF, drop the pan clean it and change the AT filter etc.
Plus it has an external trans cooler.

I believe a "total fill" is around 10.7qts, but I want to "flush" all the old ATF out plus the external cooler holds extra ATF.

So what should I need in regards to ATF, about 15 quarts?

Jeebus, that is about $200 but it should be done and we wont have to worry about it for many years.

Why not take it to a shop and have them flush it with a machine? I can get mine flushed locally for 60 bucks.

Because I am buying the ATF myself, Amsoil 100% synthetic then taking it to a shop.
I always do that, I buy all the parts then take to the shop.
Was just wondering how much ATF I need to buy, shyt is expensive.

I am doing all the fluids.

6qts Amsoil 5W30
Oil Filter
Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 4qts
I am guessing around 15 quarts ATF
Transmission filter
Toyota Red coolant 1 gallon

That is going to end up being around $400 with labor but will have piece of mind and wont have to mess with the gear lube and tranny fluid for years.

Why not just use the OEM Toy trans fluid? Has your truck always run sythetic fluids?

I'm doing the same thing as far as parts and labor, I'm buying all parts/filters/fluids from Toy Stealership and then bring them to my trusted local mechanic. I figure it might save me a little since I'm supplying all the parts and this will hopefully cut down on labor charges.

Because the Amsoil synthetic trans fluid is the best you can get, last way longer, runs cooler, etc

"This" truck has not run synthetic because I have only owned it for 4 days so far, but every car I have owned since 1977 has run 100% synthetic oil.

Yeah I can almost always get the parts cheaper than my mechanic plus there is no waiting for a parts truck when I have all the parts needed already, that way I stay in the shop and usually end up helping a bit.
Everything gets done much easier and faster.

id say 15-17qts... i know that when i used to work on 7.3 and 6.0 powerstrokes nd do tranny flushes on them we would use 19-22qts.

I just had mine fully flushed with Amsoil by a shop near my house. The guy i talked to said it took 15 qts. It ended up costing $300 for the whole deal. I highly recomend Amsoil, 200k and still shifts like new.

If I remember correctly the tranny+torque converter holds 11.7 quarts of fluid so with an external cooler I would go with 12 quarts. Don't hold me to this info like I said i THINK its 11.7 quarts not positive.

Thanks, that is about what I was figuring.
Amsoil is all I have used since 1977.

yeah you will only hold about 12.5 qts, but in order to properly flush the system you need to run more through it to clean it out of all the old dirty fluid. just simply draining it wont get it clean, there is residual in there that needs "active flow" that includes having the vehicle running so that the pump can be cleaned out as well. you need at least 15qts, to thoroughly clean the system
