Funny Little Cargo Mirrors

I am buying a 2007 SR5 and I am picking it up today...there are these funny little mirrors (two total) in the rear cargo area mounted near the rear window on the inside. They appear to face out the back windoe and the dealer wasn't quite sure what they were for...anybody have any ideas??

They are the low-tech version of a back-up camera. If you look at those mirrors while looking in your rear-view mirror, you can see out both directions when pulling out of a parking spot. They're probably not as effective for looking directly behind you, but they do serve a purpose. Once I got used to using them, they have come in handy pulling out of parking spots in busy parking lots when there are cars on either side of you and otherwise wouldn't be able to see.

Congrats on the new ride too, you'll love it!

And they have only been part of the 4Runner product line since the 2003 models came out five years ago. The lack of product knowledge would make me suspicious of how good the service department is.

Congrats on the new ride!

The average tenure of a car salesman is about 3 months so he/she probably just hasn't been there long enough to gain any real product knowledge on Toyota's. As long as it's a reputable dealer and they're treating you well, you shouldn't worry too much about the salesman. He/she will probably be gone before you take it in for your first oil change.

Those mirrors are a very nice low cost innovation. I haven't seen them on other cars or trucks or SUVs yet. It illustrates how a successful company operates. Its a low cost and effective alternative/supplement to a camera. I like them because I can look to the sides when backing out of a parking spot or driveway through the rear glass.

They also had to fill those spaces not used by the stereo speaker for those of us with the lower line of options:)

they are very helpful when backing out of a parking space say in a shopping mall. each mirror reflects the immediate opposite side of your Runner. takes a little getting used to but they are very helpful.

Ha, since I drive my Ram everyday to work, on the rare occasion I get to drive the 4Runner, I forget they're back there so I do the ol twist around and slowly creep out of the parking spot until I'm sure no one's going to fly through because now I'm blocking most of the aisle - thing. But when I do remember them, they're great for watching out for some bozo blasting down an aisle in a parking lot, when in any other vehicle, you'd have to back out all the way to the front doors before you could see if anyone's coming, and by then, it'd be too late anyway since you're already almost backed all the way out lol.

They are just one of the small features on my 4Runner that all add up to one awesome machine :bigok:

They are great for checking the sidewalk as I back out of the garage. I have no driveway, it is just a garage door right to the sidewalk and people walking on the sidewalk don't like to stop even though they see a car backing out of a garage :bash:
