Funny smell when I gas it (2003 4Runner)

Hello,

Whenever I step on the gas of my '03 Runner, I smell a really strong sulfur/cleaning agent kind of smell...this has happened since I purchased the car brand new about a year ago. Any ideas on what it could be? The dealership said that it could have something to do with the catalytic converter, but they weren't much more specific than that. Any suggestions are appreciated.

You are not the only one to experience this smell. I find it happens most with the back window down and when you accelerate hard. There is a TSB out for this problem. Check out these threads that talk about the sulfur smell:

Lazy Dealership

They do know what causes it, and it can be fixed under warrannty. Read up on it in the TSB Sulfer threads here. It's an involved process to change out the converters and PROPERLY flash the ECU. You may have a lazy dealership. They would rather spend the time doing oil changes on other vehicles.
