Is this normal?

Yeah that is normal. There is a TSB out there where they replace the catalytic converter due to the sulfur smell. I think it helped, but sometimes I still think I can smell it. Nothing is wrong with your car though.

never heard that before... the tsb prjeff46 is refering to is for a sulfur (rotten egg fart) smell. you may have a different problem.

I have a 2005 and I notice the sulfur smell. Is this something that is wrong?

TSB stands for technical service bulletin. It is basically a commonly occurring problem that the manufacturer is aware of, but doesn't warrant a recall. They will then issue a TSB with a proper fix or work-around so that dealers and service stations can properly address the issue. If your vehicle is still under warranty, the TSB's should be covered at no charge.

The sulfur smell is "normal" although unacceptable by many. The only time I notice it is if I accelerate hard with the rear window down, but I only have the rear window down in the summer when my dog is in the back. I chose not to have the dealer hacking at my exhaust system, so I am going to leave it as is.

Mine is a new '08 with 6k miles and I get the sulfur smell BAD especially when using just a little gas at the bottem RPM range of a gear and then stopping (UGH!). I have the TRD exhaust. Does this TSB apply to me?

Thanks for the info.

I the only time I notice it is when the back window is down and the light turns green. I prolly don't need to worry.

Hate to state the obvious but...

Exhaust... smells.

I think it's normal, nothing wrong. I get the same smells, not the sulphur.

i suspect you are right, i was thinking back to my chem lab days where concentrated chlorine, hcl or bleach would knock you on your a$$ if not under a fume hood...

mryan8517, provided what you are referring to is a result of driving withe the rear window down, it is part of owning the truck.

Might I suggest a much simpler solution:

After a minor scrape off-roading...I had to do some work on the last piece of the tail anyway. So I replaced the part and then I had a local shop that I trust...cut off the end of the pipe up to the resonator and weld on a stainless 2" bent pipe and the exhaust exits out the right of the truck...voila! Painted it black with some high temp paint so it wouldn't stand out. I hate those stupid shiny exhaust pipes!

Shouldn't cost you more than 40-50 bucks and 15 minutes to have a shop torch the end and weld on a new piece, and your exhaust exits out the side like it does on the older runners!

Ya it smells I understand. But it should not be so overwhelming as to make you sick. If its normal then Toyota is in a world f sh*t for exposing customers to excessive levels of carcinogens.
