yeah, those things would be secondary on my list, it sounds like the poster has some other issues,
when were the spark plugs/wires last changed? have you run some fuel injector cleaner (ie. 44k by BG) thru it lately? how about cleaning the MAF??
if those dont work, how about a compression test to see if you have any blown/leaky seals
what size tires you running on what gears?
if all turn out to be good, then try the CAI and the aftermarket exhaust,
theres a ton of reasons your 4runner could be running slow but also know that its not a regular or common thing.
This could be a little involved. When I bought the car 2½ years ago, I planned to tow a small 16' boat with it, so took it into a shop to have a 96 plate trans oil cooler installed and, since car was new to me, had them change all fluids front to back, install a new timing belt and generally check it out.
They called the next day and asked me to come in. When I did, they showed me residue from a leaking water pump and recommended changing it, since they had it partly torn down anyway. Of course, I said go ahead. Then they recommended cam oil seals, etc., etc. I know they were strongly selling me up, but then again, I've been a mechanic most of my life and have a LOT of experience with distributor/carburettor engines.
Each thing they said was reasonable and sensible and tho' they were highly recommended by several people, I didn't like their attitude toward me personally which made it hard to OK all this. Since I didn't feel I had much choice and their recommendations Were reasonable, I gave a go-ahead and they went thru it - spark plugs, wires and all. Cost me over $2,000.00 to get it back, but I knew all that was done. For the best, I think. In 2½ years/30,000 miles I've had no issues at all - except for the power thing. They swore all was perfect.
Power is so poor, I gave up trying to tow the boat on the highway. It just can't do it.
I'm not familiar with the all electronic ignition/injection systems, but I will say that if this thing had a distributor I would guarantee that the timing was not advanced enuf. I still have my old timing light and dwell meter, but apparently can't use them on this engine. It gets just 18 mpg on highway - got 21 when I 1st got it - so I'd say it's getting plenty of gas, just not using it properly.
Is there a way to advance timing on these engines ?? I'd swear that's the problem, but am told it runs off a crank sensor and is computer controlled and non-adjustable.
Sorry to be so long winded, but this is a major thing to me. Hope someone has some answers. Thanks
Lar.
