G284 = 4.30 in a 5spd

So i searched the g284 code, read all the threads. Seems the axle codes can be wrong, etc. i just jacked up one wheel and spun tire 2times. Driveshaft spun 4and just over 1/4 turns. So i guess that means in this case, g284 does mean 4.30 gears in a 5speed 3.0.

Does it mean anything else that im not aware of? Does it have towing package? Only had her for two weeks so im still getting aquainted.

Just means 4.30 ratio 4 pinion open diff. That's all.

Okay. Didnt know if i had something special here. The sucky part is all the 3rd member assemblies i see on-line aleady built with a locker are in ratios other than what i have.

Most guys gear away from 4.30's... you can't get new ring and pinion from anybody but Toyota, so they're rare and expensive to replace. You'll have a hard time finding an aftermarket third with a locker in 4.30 for the same reason.

Lunchbox lockers (Spartan, Aussie) are an easy install you can do yourself with basic tools, and will cost you much less than buying a complete locked 3rd.

I will prolly go 4.56 when that time comes, but then i got to have the front regeared too. Plan is to put a detroit or elocker in rear soon.

i have a 95 toyota 4runner with a 3.0l and in the door jam it say g284 i heard that is a 4:30 gear ratio and the 3rd member is bad is this correct and do i replace it with the same

yes replace it with the same especially if you 4Runner is 4x4. personally unless you have owned a truck since new and know it's entire history I wouldn't trust a door jab label on a 22 year old truck that has been owned by several people. Who knows what has been swapped. I would pull the third, count the ring gear and divide by the pinion teeth to confirm the ratio
