So I recently purchased a 1998 4runner sr5 5 speed with 4.10 gears. It had a motor that had thrown a rod. It came with a spare running motor so I only need to do a motor swap. Frame and body are good. This is my second Toyota. I purchased a brand new 1992 SR5 4 cylinder 4x4 back when I was in the navy. When I got out I sold it and have wanted another one ever since. This is going to be a play in the mountains rig so I figured I would join this forum to gain some knowledge on these.
First off I figured I wanted an e-locker. Problem solved. Found a 97 limited auto with an e-locker. It was wrecked in the front but ran and the e-locker locked when the button was pushed. So I plunked down some more cash and came home with it.
She is a wee bit rough. Upon getting it home and on the lift the damage was worse than I thought. It was sitting in a field with snow all around it so I couldn't crawl under it. In the mean time I found out that here are two different gear ratios in these 4runners. In keeping with my luck these don't match. The donor vehicle is a 4.30 and mine is a 4.10. No problem while the motor is out Ill just swap both front and rear axles.
Here is the problem. It was a hard enough hit to shift the front diff over enough that the driveline dented the pan on the trans. looks like it shifted about an an inch and a half ish. If anyone with an auto can tell me how much room there is between the driveshaft and pan that would be great.
So how tough are the front diffs. Is there a way to inspect them to see if its ok. It turn nice and smooth. If I had to could I just do a swap of the gears. I looks like I have diff oil leaking out of the diff where the axle goes in.
What I have figured out is that this is an addiction. now Im thinking a little lift and wheels and tires. Any info would be appreciated. I am also going to be parting this thing out if anybody needs anything. Most stuff will be going on eBay. it does have some good parts left not he passenger side.
