I've looked at some threads, and it appears I'm certainly not the only one that is having trouble programming the homelink button. I have a rolling code garage (Raynor from 06') and when pressing the training button on the door power unit...I press the homelink button in the 4 runner and the garage door light blinks - but still doesn't open the door. So the two units are communicating, but not truly linking up. Any ideas?

could you explain in details the steps taken, I never got mine to work ... and it seems like I tried everything.
For me:
0) **Follow instructions in manual to reset (wipe out) the homelink**
1 ) Hold garage remote button a few inches from homelink button. Press both and wait until the light flashes rapidly
2) Walked into garage and pressed learn button on garage door motor
3) Back to car and followed instructions for programming with a rolling code opener (which is pressing button for 2 secs, twice)
Then it worked. But not the first time I tried.
I think the big help was erasing the homelink memory and starting from scratch. That is a big step.

glad you got it working. had a similar experience programming my wife's the other day—huge PITA (note: not a Toyota homelink). i kept erasing the memory and repeating the steps over and over... finally, after a dozen or so tries, the stars aligned and eureka!
still have no idea what black magic made it work that last time, but don't care either.

Haha exactly! I've learned that later in life...when something works out just run with it...don't ponder it. I think maybe precise timing has something to do with it...

I do garage doors for a living. I've tried to program a caddy before multiple times, didn't take, called on star and did the same exact steps and it worked. Didn't have a problem with the runner. If you have rolling code, you have to program the remote frequency to the homelink, then get the operator to recognize it.

Worked for me too (2011 4runner)
On my 2014 T4R I just did the remote part and it worked fine since. I didn't have to do the "learn" button.

You have an old garage door opener - not rolling code
Check the manual for your garage door opener, if you don't have it, you can look it up online.

Delete existing codes already stored in your T4R? I believe you push and hold Homelink buttons 1 and 3 simultaneously for 10-15 seconds.

Jeremy, the older opener style (electronically at least) is what I thought at first too, but the opener is only a year old and the manual said it was a rolling code. Everything I've seen on-line indicates that I should have needed to use the "learn" button also, but it worked with just the remote. Why I don't know, but I'll roll with it.

1. program the handheld remote to the homelink button
2. click the learn button on the motor
3. press the appropriate button to learn the rolling code up to 3-4 times
4. both doors now open on the 4runner and the 2012 Tacoma.
it depends on the brand and how the rolling code is implemented I think.
some will work with just the handheld remote, some need both steps.
1. program the handheld remote to the homelink button
2. click the learn button on the motor
3. press the appropriate button to learn the rolling code up to 3-4 times
4. both doors now open on the 4runner and the 2012 Tacoma.

Just got mine working. Here are my steps that worked for me:
1. Use the original remote door opener (at first I was using a replacement that didn't work).
2. Press door remote at the same time as the homelink button. Light on homelink should go from slow orange to fast green.
3. Press "smart" or "learn" button the garage opener controller
4. Press homelink button again.
That's it! Good Luck.
