Garage jack for me truck

Hey need to know if a 1.5 tomorrow Pittsburg jack is good enough to get the tires off my truck to work on them.
And do y’all have that lug tightener that clicks when tight enough?
Since I’m solo I just want to not get crushed or kill my truck.

I like the craftsman jack, because lifetime and Sears, but Harbor Freight has a similar jack for $139 and probably a coupon

Save yourself a trip - aluminum jack, 6-ton stands, and a torque wrench from HF. Those torque sticks are expensive given their limited use.

Get a 24" breaker bar (Harbor Freight) and 21mm deep socket (home depot, OSH or sears)

Get the Arcan one from Costco or Northern Tool and some jack stands and wheel chocs from Northern Tool (of you have one in town).

Tekton torque wrenches from Amazon seem to be the best deal. But get some breaker bars for untightening. Again from Northern Tool

Edit: get your impact sockets there too (Klutch is their house brand). The mid grade sockets/tools (Kobalt, Tekton, Klutch, etc.) are all made in the same factories in Taiwan until you get up to expensive Snap-On/Matco type professional grade. Avoid the Chinese stuff like the cheaper Harbor Freight line, most of Home Depot Husky line, etc.

I use these with everything. Extremely sturdy and cheap.

But +1 on the HF breaker bar.


I can't attest to the Pittsburgh jack, but I have 4 Pittsburgh jack stands that have worked perfectly.


In my experience (Other people's may vary) the HF torque wrench is more of a one (or limited) use tool. Accuracy is fine, but the internals rusted to hell after a few weeks of sitting in its carrying case in my garage.

I got the jack stands, Pittsburgh 3T jack, breaker bar and socket. I need to get chuks to be safe.

I've tried to get the jack to work but can't seem to figure out the issue. I put the handle in, tighten nut, bleed it (I think), pump and it won't move the arm.
there has to be something really dumb that I'm not doing right.

I'm at work right now or I'd throw up a video/pics. What am I doing wrong or is there a little trick?

Shouldn't need to bleed a new floor jack. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops, that closes the valve and you are ready to jack up the vehicle. You carefully crack the handle loose going counter clockwise to open the valve to lower the vehicle. I'm sure that you already know this

Anyone know of a floor jack that doesn't drop the vehicle dangerously fast? I've used three of the harbor freight floor jacks and they all do the same thing. I know you're supposed twist the handle super slowly and sometimes that works, but more often than not the car still drops fast and scares the shit out of me.

My friend had a harbor freight floor jack up and was getting ready to put the jack stands under it when it dropped like a bad habit, lucky he did not get hurt. He ordered a better jack from Summit.

I've only owned Craftsman floor jacks & you can turn them slowly.

Harbor Freight stuff is mostly junk.

Tekton tools off Amazon....it's all I buy now.

FWIW, I'm using a 30 year old, 5T Lincoln floor jack that had the cylinder rebuilt about 10 years ago. It has always been a bit touchy for the 15 years that I've owned it when it comes to opening the valve to let the vehicle down.

Congrats to you for buying some tools and learning to do the maintenance yourself !

Harbor Freight stuff is mostly junk.

News to me . I've spent probably 4 grand at HF and have realistically seen about an 85% success rate as far as "this met or exceeded my needs."

I have the 1.5 Pittsburgh jack , and while it's a little underrated for the job, it works. The Pittsburgh 6 ton jack stands are also super cheap, and also work well. More expensive tools are usually better, but not always necessary.

I have had the 3 ton version of that Sears jack that Octanejunky posted for about 10 years now, and it has excellent feathering when loosening the handle to descend.

I won't go under unless the frame rails are resting on big blocks of wood. Jack stands could tip, or who knows, even fail. Slim chance, but with wooden blocks there is 0% chance.
