It is well known that lots of cars are broken in because of portable GPS units are in the plain view or suction cup on the windshield is a dead give away. The only solution is to make it hiden but also usable without the need to scramble in the glove box.
Here is my solution:
There were few places I had in mind for my Garmin 750. One was eyeglass compartment overhead, but due to lack of sufficient space I scraped that idea. Second was rear view mirror but that would be visible from outside when car parked. My third and final choice was that empty space of a beverage holder. I had plenty of area and discrete location for my 4.3 in GPS unit. All I needed was some time, plenty of patience and some materials.
Materials
1) Sheet Aluminum
2) Low Density Foam
3) Vinyl and Fabric
4) Glue
5) Epoxy
I started with tracing cupholders outline and making templates for bottom and top of the opening. Two aluminum sheets cut and checked for fit was the foundation of this project. Aluminum bends easily therefore making box for 3x5 unit was piece of cake. I used epoxy to bond parts together.
Once top and bottom were ready I measured the depth of cup holder and used pine spacers to get right level at the top.
Foam is added to give the box its shape.
Then hinges added. Lid is made of 2 identical sheets of Al with hinges secured in between. Once I was happy with results I glued in some soft cloth and foam for the GPS box and vinyl for lid and rest of the holder.
That is all there is to it. When GPS in use I open the lid, power the Nuvi and get on the way. Once I park
