Garmin - SUV Icon

In case you didn't know, for those of you who have a Garmin Nav device (nuvi, streetpilot or zumo) you can change the icon on your garmin so it isn't the purple car. Here is the link to all the icons they have created so far.

I noticed they came out with a SUV, so what do you guys think? What SUV does this most closely compare too? It looks like the 4R with the hood scoop, the windows look like a jeep to me, who knows but I think I will switch my icon to this.

Anyone looking for a Garmin Nuvi650 , costco is selling one for $299.99. If you aren't a member they charge you like 15 bucks, but it's still a good deal. I have a member code that someone posted on slickdeals but it may be hard to return the item...
No rebates to be bothered with either.

They probably made it generic enough so no SUV owners would get upset that theirs wasn't included (can you imagine the howls if they did a Grand Cherokee and not a 4Runner??).

That said, I still like the blue triangle -- with the maps set to north up. I never liked the 3D view, and heading south while the arrow was pointed up just didn't seem right.

They have some neat new ones, though. I hope you caught their 12 Days of Christmas set.

Thanks for the update.

There is a way to get a 4runner on there. Apparently, someone over at gpspassion made a script and if you can take 36 pictures of your 4runner (varying at 10 degree angles) around the vehicle and 36 pictures above and under the vehicle (varying at 10 degree intervals) you can create a 4runner. You will need to be able to save and edit PNG files in 32bit mode (Fireworks may work) and you will need a lot of time as i hear it takes a while to make one. A guy named chaz8 got his Lexus RX series crossover SUV made in 5 hours, it looks okay, but i think a nice simple 3d cartoonish version looks better than a real picture made into a 3d model. It seems a cartoonish simple version would better fit the maps etc. The guys over on the forums are still perfecting it but the 2d view doesnt seem too hard. Anyone wanna give it a try?

only confirmed on a nuvi660, but all nuvis seem to use the same vehicle file formats as you guys can tell from the download page.

I might try it if i get a nuvi.

edit: works on all nuvi's atleast. also is very easy to atleast change colors of existing vehicles on garmin website.

Here's the .zip of all of the Garmin vehicles. I used the white SUV w/Christmas tree on top for my recent Christmas drive from CA to NM.

This is a really stupid question I imagine... but if I pick up a Garmin nuvi 200w, and... I'm in a forrest..., will it still place me where I am, or is this GPS only "find walmart"?

Cool, I'll have to check this out and see if I can at least change the white color to my generic Titanium Silver! I agree sticking with the cartoon feel is probably easier.

Not sure on the nuvi 200w but my nuvi 370 will place me exactly where I am even if in the middle of the woods. It has a coordinates lock, so you could save your current location as anything you would like. For instance I take the Nuvi out of my car and use it to mark some of my hunting locations in the woods. But I am not sure if this is a feature of the 300 and 600 series only.

ALT4r now you have me working on this instead of doing my job! haha, I think I will have to create my 4R, I read the entire thread you linked to and I am going to give it a shot, one cool thing I found was that a few people said try and find an interactive 3D model of your vehicle it will make the new icon look great, well of course Toytota has this page for the 4R and it has a perfect interactive 3D model of the 4R, so it should look pretty good on the Garmin.

This will allow me to get the required views! I'll see when I can find some non work time to get ths done, and then I can post the file for others to use.

This is so cool, I just got a Garmin nuvi 350 for christmas the other day. Now my dumb question, how do you get one of those images onto the nuvi?

the install instructions are on the Garmin page

http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles/howtoinstall/

Your nuvi should have come with a cord to connect to the computer. I downloaded the zip file for the vehicles I wanted to try to my computer HD, unzipped them and then saved the one I wanted to my Nuvi Drive in the specific folder they tell you to use.

I take it this Nuvi is like the latest greatest version ?

Which model is a good one to get ? Whats the difference ?

Do you all hard mount or hard wire ? or can you set it up portable. It really wouldn't leave my truck so it really does not matter . Does it plug in to power ports or what powers it ?

Go to the Garmin website and select different models to compare (a side-by-side comparison). Also check what comes in the box. I bought the Garmin Nuvi260 for my father (the lowest model that I would consider) and the Nuvi350 for myself. They both speak the street names, which was important to me, but the 260 did not come with the USB cable for downloads and the power cord plugs into the Nuvi unit. On the 350 the power cord plugs directly into the mount, so it is faster to install and remove each day. Note: they are a hot-item, so leaving them in the vehicle is too tempting for as_hole thieves.

Hey thanks! Just picked one up. I almost bought a 200w from best buy for the same price!
