gas burning question i need some good advice

I got a 1990 yota 4runner v6 and i can go like 67 miles if that on like a courter of a tank whats going on is it my air temp sencer its all stock for now any advice let me kno

P.s it runs and drives great kida seems a little worm but the temp is normal THANKS GUYS

If you drive it moderately hard, 280 miles is all I get out of a tank with mine. V8 though. Try tuning it up?

I'd say a tune up, maybe it wasnt kept very well. It's a 1990, probably driven quite a bit. Did you think you were going to get better mpg as time went on? If you think it's worth it i'd say take it in for a tuneup or atleast to have it looked at.

R3d, You haven't given us much real info. I'd suggest collecting your data a little more accurately - like exact number of miles ran between fill-ups, and exactly how many gallons to fill up; using the dash gauge to determine how much gas you have is very inaccurate for this purpose.

Is this a new (to you) car, or have you seen a change over time? When was its last tuneup? Also, what kind of driving do you do - freeway or street, heavy or light foot?

Now I know why there was a thread on spell check. 17 errors in 5 sentences. I can understand "errors" like ppl, but come on, courter?!?! :bash: Even after correcting it, I still can't figure out two things... and I didn't even correct it to proper grammar everywhere, just readable.

I have a '95 with the 3.0 3VZE V6. You think 67 to a quarter tank is bad? Thats 268 to a tank, that is 16.75 MPG. (Taking into account that you use 16 gallons of gas, and that 268 is your range)

More info on your truck is necessary. Have you done any work on it? We need ACTUAL fuel mileage info, like range and MPG. (calculated by taking gallons filled divided by mileage completed on that tank.)

I could say I get 10 MPG with mine (I do), get used to it, it is an SUV, but instead I'll give you advice.

Please note that this DOES cost money, so if you don't have any, I recommend you start saving now.

-Change your oil & filter to Mobil 1 10W-30 High Mileage formula (Helps swell the rings so that you can reduce oil burn, [If any]. (~$60) {1 MPG}

-Locking hubs (Asin). (Check eBay, ~$50) {2 MPG}

-Fuel filter. (~$10) {.5 - 1 MPG}

-Run a can or three of Seafoam through your tank. (~$7/Can) {0 - 1 MPG}

-Change sparkplugs to NGK IX - BKRSEIX. (~$44) {0 - 3 MPG + improved throttle response}

-Change sparkplug wires to NGK TX50 (~$40) {0 - 1 MPG}

-Change air filter to Genuine Toyota via Partznet (the ad at the top) ($15) {0 - .5 MPG}

-Change Transfer case, 75W-90, 1 quart
Front diff, 75W-90, 2 quarts
Rear diff, 75W-90, 2.5 quarts
To Mobil 1 Gear oil
(~$71.94) {0 - 1 MPG}

-Change your O2 sensor to Denso (~$90) {0 - .5 MPG}

-New headers from Downey (~$300) {More for power, lol}

-New exhaust from either flowmaster or a custom shop (~$?>200) {Again more for power}

-Tire pressure. Depending on your tire, it should be at ~35- 38 PSI. ($.25 if you have to go to a gas station) {0 - 2 MPG}

-Remove roof rack support beams and cross bars. (~$0) {.5 - 1 MPG, mainly for high speed driving.}

-Lighten the load, lose some weight. Either you, or what's in the car. ($fat) {0 - 5 MPG}

-Your driving habits. Try to not go past 2.75k RPM while accelerating. Pretend there is an egg under the gas pedal, if you break it. YOU LOSE!!! (~$2) {0 - 5 MPG}

Thats all the advice I have right now, I've been thinking very hard about getting better MPG with the 3.0, that is my advice.

Now if you'll excuse me I have a 5 page paper to write about change. lol.

And I have no "personal crap" about spelling... except for that one time my spelling teacher beat me for using the word courter. :awais:

That's not bad. Especially during the winter months. I wouldn't be too worried. Did you just get the vehicle, or do you think the MPG was going down?

Him, 16.75 MPG seemed ok to me. I don't quite know the performance of previous generation 4runners, but it didn't seem too bad, especially since the numbers didn't sound hard. And as you said, it is an SUV after all :bigok:

Locking hubs work like this. When locked, it locks in the CV axle, which spins just as much as the tire does. When unlocked the CV doesn't spin, therefore reducing wear & decreasing resistance that is caused by the front differential and such.

There is a knob-like object on the side of the hub, one way is locked, one way is unlocked. Now just an FYI, if you left them unlocked and you you engage 4WD, well won't be in 4WD.

Unfortunately for my 4th gen, and the rest of 4th gens, there are no hubs that we can use, as they are all incompatible with our trucks.

the 90's 3.0 autos had a city rating of 13 and hwy of 17. so that 67 miles on a quarter tank is "possible," if it's mostly stop/go traffic and a heavy foot. i have a 94 3.slow (135K) and it does drink alot but runs just fine. change the air filter and air up the tires won't hurt.
