Gas Cap Issue, need advice!

I filled up the gas tank yesterday on my way to work and the attendant didn't close the cap at all. I drove about 40 miles with the cap off. My engine light and VSC TRAC lights went on. I put the gas cap back, would the lights go off eventually or do I have to do something to reset the lights? I hope I don't have to take it to the dealer. Thanks in advance for any advice.:thanks:

Don't panic yet. IIRC it has to go a certain distance/start-up, shut-off a few times before it'll reset. The other option is to pull the battery cable for twenty minutes or so. After you pull the battery cable you'll have to reset the radio, clock and auto-windows (roof, rear and drivers'). To reset the windows you have to run them full open then full closed with your finger on the button.

Thanks very much, I did what you said with the battery and the lights went away. Can you actually do any damage by driving the truck with the vas cap off?

Only if you drive it through a car wash or crash it. With the cap off water can get in the gas. With the cap off and the VSC fail light on the car won't help you recover from a skid which may increase your chances of crashing.

?

So I had that same issue and it wasn't due to me not replacing the cap. The cap came loose on its own, it's like the old one is worn and it doesn't lock in. Maybe you need a new cap all together.
