Gas Guage Help

hey everyone. I've been having a problem with the gas guage on my truck ever since is started driving it. First im pretty sure the gas guage is not accurate at all but im guessing thats normal. The idiot light that is supposed to come on when the truck is low on gas never comes on. Sometimes i let it get really low on gas (according to the guage) and the idiot light wont come on. As a kid i always remember it working though so maybe i just have to wait a while longer but im scared that i might run of fuel while trying. Is there any way to check if the idiot light is burned out or not working properly? Thanks for the help

Pull the gauge cluster and replace the bulb, then you'll know.

But MTL it's the sending unit that's bad. Common problem in older Toys. Cleaning it may help, but you have to pull the pump/sending unit from th tank. There's an access panel under the rear set (or is it the cargo area?).
