Gas milage

So I filled up a few days ago to a full tank and decided I was going to check it as I do once in a blue moon to see if things are ok. I fill up at same station , same pump all the time if I'm local . I use Mobile 87 oct.

I drive and use 3/8 tank per the gas gage and decided I would drive like a normal person and not be jumpin on the go pedal all the time. I set the trip meter and kept track of how many gallons on the next fill. I got 18.2 city driving only and that not counting in the larger tire factor where I actually travel further than the odo shows.

Not bad at all for a full time 4x4 V8 city driving

(By the way my in dash comp. read 17.8 mpg)

I dont know how to factor the bigger tire factor in.

Last weekend I too a trip to visit friends in another state. Even with traveling up an down some decent sized hills
and stop & go driving through a stretch of 14 traffic lights my 4Runner did pretty good mileage wise.
Actual, calculated mileage was 20.14 MPG and the on-board computer read 23.10 MPG.

The tank before this one was 18.30 MPG (calculated) with a mix of city/higway driving.

Not too bad for a V8 4Runner using 87 octane.

I'm lucky to get 17 MPG on my lifted 2WD V8 with 32" AT tires,

wow! mine reading is always at 14.1 to 14.5 only, i mostly do city driving with moderate speed. i only going back and forth from my house to my store at 2 miles each travel. i never see 15 mpg so far. and i am using Shell 87 octane. how can you get 18.2?

I sympathize lawwailok... I've never been able to get anywhere close to 18mpg in the city and I suspect it's down to the definition of "city driving".

My average is more like 14mpg and I'm by no means an aggressive driver.

I live in San Francisco where there are hills galore and stop signs seemingly every block. You rarely get above 30mph and you rarely travel more than a quarter mile before having to stop. Going up hills and constantly stopping and starting is going to result in really bad gas mileage. It's a fact of life.

In fact to get to many parts of the city I have to climb an incredibly steep hill from my house when the car is cold. In that mile alone I probably get 2mpg!

If I lived in a flat city that had longer stretches of road without traffic lights or stop signs I'm sure I could get closer to 18mpg.

On the freeway I can get about 20mpg pretty consistently.

Its all relative and I did the numbers right off the odo. & the gas pump.

Even when I lead foot it ( most of my driving ) I never get below 16 in summer , in winter its 15 though.

I didn't mean this to be a milage war , but I only posted because I was happy with what I got.

Maybe it was my break in method ...lol , never believed in that and was off road and in 4lo lock with 85 miles on it. Next day full of mud , 3 hour drive at 70 + mph. Drive it like you stole it off the lot !!!!!

I don't check my milage very often , frankly because I don't give a rip and I didn't buy it for milage. I just check once in a while to make sure its not running like an H2....lol.

I also am running bigger tires than stock and didn't factor that into it either. It might have given me a tenth or two more.

Wow, that's a pretty good reading for a 4wd V8! The GX never ever saw anything above 15mpg in the city. But I did get 22mpg once on a long trip, and the max it usually gets is around 19mpg.

Your mileage shouldn't be any surprize, as short in-city trips are the least mileage friendly conditions possible.....for any vehicle.

Except for hybrids! They tend to get better gas mileage on those short city trips than they do out on the open highway.

Well, if you want to split hairs like that LOL....then short trips still aren't good for hybrids. It's still employs an IC engine, and if it doesn't have time to get up to temp, it's not getting good mileage (relatively).
