Gas mileage killed after K&N install..

I got my K&N filter and put it in yesterday. I drove around for a little and instead of my mileage going up, it went from 17.1 to around 14.5. I reset the computer that keeps track of that, but it still says 14.5. Whats up with this?

Disconnect the battery to reset the ecu. It monitors driving habits and needs to be manually reset. I'm no expert, but to maintain the same air to fuel ratio, more air means more fuel. Give it time, its way too early to be making that call. Also make sure driving habits haven't changed.

I think it's going to take more than a day to tell if the K&N helped or hurt your mpgs. If you think about it, K&N filter flows more air so you will need more fuel to keep the air/fuel ratio in check. Of course that only really only matters at Wide open throttle. Pull the ECM fuse or the battery cables for a while to reset everything. It may help to start fresh. You may want to clean the MAF sensor as well.

Which is the ECM fuse? I don't wanna screw with the cables to the battery.

Update: I pulled the wires from the battery and drove about 20 miles. I'm back to around 16.9 to 17.1. That's about where I started. I'm gonna do some more driving and then I'll check back.

I went form 18.5 to 20.5 in about 5 tanks of gas and ahve remained at 20.5 with the HCF gone and the stock style K & N

Also you'll find yourself using more throttle to hear the intake- and there goes your MPG.

The trip computer is inaccurate- use milage divided by gallons your tank uses.

Though it is somewhat embarrassing to admit, I find myself doing this, even a month or so after the install. It is hard to drive like I did before, though I'm setting back into it.

I didn't notice any change in thorttle tone with the drop in filter....

I have a k&n drop in and I noticed no gains or loss in mpg or power.

Update: I seafoamed the 4runner today. Put 1/3 into the PCV and the rest in my gas tank. I still have my K&N in. Now take a look at my gas mileage:

I'm one happy kid!
