Gas mileage problems. Help!

Whats up guys i'm new here. Been browsing around and checking out some runners. But anyways mine is horrible on gas, i can go about 4 days on a full tank driving about 20 miles a day. I dont know whats up with it. Its bone stock has a k&n drop in filter and a thrush exhaust. I have some new spark plugs/wires on the way to see if it helps out at all. It also doesn't feel like it has much power and there isn't any cel's on? Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Yeah not a joke it's horrible. I do not think the plugs have ever been changed. That I know of and I know for sure the wires haven't been? Think it could be catalytic converter clogged?
 
Our tanks are 18 gallons, and the gauge is known to be faulty. You can try getting an Ultra gauge or Scan gauge II and it will better track your milage.

If you're still getting craptastic mpgs, tune up and check your muffler...it may need to be replaced.
 
If you were only getting 80 miles out of a tank, that would be 4.5mpg. The truck would barely run, and blow black smoke everywhere. It you're truly only getting much out of a tank, I'd seriously put effort into finding an exterior fuel leak.
 
Gauge/Sending Unit

you should be filling about 4 to 5 more gallons of fuel. A lot of the misleading gauge readings you're experiencing can be solved using a ultragauge.
 
Sounds like you have a multitude of issues here. Definitely an issue with the gauge (common.) But you're still under 8 MPG. Start with the basics: full tune up, lube everything up, check tire inflation, etc. Also, with it being that low, I'd actually start checking for fuel leaks.
 
Thanks guys for the help. I replaced spark plugs and wires and it helped a noticeable amount but like you guys said I feel like there should be more going into the tank when I fill up so I think the gauge is reading wrong.
 
How much is a 'noticeable amount' from replacing plugs/wires?

I did mine about a month ago and noticed 0.5-1 mpg change from before. Granted, it was just regular maintenance for me, my mpg's were not off like yours.

Well I got about 60 miles on half tank so far so it's doing a little better. I've been reading a lot online and there's a lot of people with the same problem as me and it turns out to be the gas gauge reading wrong. There was one guy that he said he drove it until his gas gauge wouldn't go any lower and he drained his tank to see how much was left and he had 5 gallons. I'm gonna just start filling up by miles and see how that works. Maybe every 250 miles or so?
 
Ripcord already covered this point with his link, but i'll say it anyway.

Your K&N filter is an oiled filter most likely, your MAF is likely gummed up on top of the fact that your gauge reads about as well as mine does from the sound of it.

Clean your MAF frequently with appropriate cleaner, and be careful not to over oil your filter.

(FWIW my gas gauge usually reads half a tank after about 30 miles, i go by my tripometer. As you suggested you were going to try. My gauge seems to read accurate for the bottom half of the tank though, and my gas light has never let me down.)
 
3Gen - FYI, I get about 260-290 depending on city or highway driving.

Wow hCurphy, glad you use your tripometer, I get about 125-150 per half tank. Guess my gauge reads somewhat accurate.
