Ripcord already covered this point with his link, but i'll say it anyway.
Your K&N filter is an oiled filter most likely, your MAF is likely gummed up on top of the fact that your gauge reads about as well as mine does from the sound of it.
Clean your MAF frequently with appropriate cleaner, and be careful not to over oil your filter.
(FWIW my gas gauge usually reads half a tank after about 30 miles, i go by my tripometer. As you suggested you were going to try. My gauge seems to read accurate for the bottom half of the tank though, and my gas light has never let me down.)
Hasn't been to long I do oil changes regularly and I clean the k&n every other oil change.
Thats about what I get. I was at about 135 miles at half tank, and I generally get 260 or so before I get close to the E.
I would check the MAF periodically since you are running a K&N. On my two, the one with a paper filter never gets dirty (the MAF anyways) but the one with a K&N needs to be cleaned every now and then. Its very easy to over oil them.
I have filled up my tank twice and so far i'm averaging 15.8 MPG combination of city/freeway driving the first full tank seem to have drained in my opinion but i was told the gauge on this are a bit erratic and fluctuates from the factory,i also have a 93 truck with a 3.0l and my gauge is a lot better but i'm only averaging 14 mpg.So how do you calibrate this gauges?i'm still a noob with 3rd gen.:hello:
You can calibrate your gauge when you fill up and your on flat ground. Hold the trip meter button turn the key to on while stil holding it after about 5 seconds push it 3 times and hold it on the third and it should beep at you let off then hold it again until it beeps again and that's it.
