Gas mileage readout flickers

I have an 05 SR5 with 60000 miles on it and I have started to notice that the orange lit readout that can display things such as mileage left in the gas tank, average MPG, and whatnot will randomly flicker. The strange thing is that it only happens on one half of the screen at a time and never the whole thing at once.

When it flickers it looks like the backlight is dimming off and on. Its still very readable when it is doing it but just really annoying.

Has anyone had any experience with anything like this and if my unit is going bad how expensive of a fix am I looking at? Thanks.

Yes - this happens to me - especially when it is cold outside. Toyota tried to tell me I need to replace the entire unit - which I believe is not true. Maybe others can comment. I have not fixed the display light yet, but I think it is similar fix to another repair I have made.

I had one of the HVAC knob lights go out on me. It is a similar fix, I believe. The little bulb that goes in the back is a bit pricey for its size, but I believe it is a Toyota exclusive product.

Search the forums to find a step-by-step on how to take apart the dash. it is quite simple.

That's funny...maybe it's an '05 thing, because mine is doing the exact same thing. Anyone else have it fixed?

I got an 06 nearing 60 and I just noticed the same thing tonight. Only the left side though.

Mine did it when it was new, the first 6 months to a year of ownership. It has since stopped.

its the bulb. there are 2 little bulbs in that assmbly that light the display up. replace those bulbs and you'll be fine.
i work for a dealer and also had the same issue on my own 05...fixed it.

I have an 06 and I have the same problem on the left side. So it's not just an 05 thing. I'm glad you guys have already worked out the problem I'm going to fix that when I go home.
