gas mileage SUCKS!!

GOTBOOST

I filled up Thursday afternoon and it topped out at 18.03 gallons! We left out for jacksonville and hit I10 the WHOLE way (no city driving)! My low fuel light came on and I decided I would keep going until the needle got down below the line. I finally decided I would get gas because I was getting kind of nervous. I filled up and it held 15.6 gallons, which means I had somewhere around 2 1/2 gallons in the tank but I had only been 242 miles since I filled up! Driving nothing but city I can get 265-275 to the tank!! There was 3 adults, 1 child, our luggage, tires are 265/75/16, and cruise was set on about 73 the whole way. Am I losing my mind or is this right?

it is pretty remarkable feat that you "filled up" 18+ gallons at the pump on this vehicle.

from what past users have stated, the 3rd Gen V6 4Runner has a tank with 16 GAL usable and about 2 GAL to slush around the bottom. I think the 4Runner is supposed to run out of gas around the 16 GAL mark leaving the 2 GAL unused.

When I topped my truck off it held 18+ gallons, beleive it or not!

I never do more then 15 as I thought it was possible to over fill the tank sending gas down the breather tube and onto the charcoal canister, I could be wrong on that I just thought it was a possibility

under 70mph itll come up.. there's a sweet spot in there, you just need to find it. Where you running with the ect on? It wont help much on short trips but on the highway it def will increase your mpgs..

OK my mpg sucks, a full tank last me about 200 mi on local driving, any idea on what maybe my problem??

:lookout:

If it makes you feel any better I get 250 max on a tank. I've never filled up more than 15.5 gallons though.

Yeah, the max I have ever driven is 295 on a tank of gas and that was about 15.8 gallons. So perhaps all these people getting 320 on a tank are putting in more than 16 ....

I get about 220~240 miles, putting in between 13 and 14 gallons each time.

My uncle says the type and weight of the oil matters; I haven't bought into that argument though.

Probably the biggest impact on my fuel mileage, other than having summer vs winter gas in the tank, has been getting the engine to warm up quicker thanks to replacing the ECT sensor and the radiator cap. Cleaning the MAF and replacing the fuel filter helped also, well at least in my mind they did.

I typically get between 22 and 23MPG in mixed city/highway driving. I keep all my fillup records in a logbook, and from what I can tell, the sweet spot is somewhere between 50 and 60MPH. A stretch of I-15 in Utah has a posted 80MPH speed limit; taking that stretch at 80 netted me about 18MPG when I next filled up.

My truck is pretty stock as well-- 204k miles, 265/70R16 A/T tires, 4wd w/5 speed transmission. I'm running Mobil1 in 5W-30 and replaced the spark plugs a little while back as well.

At 73MPH, you're probably on the downhill side of the efficiency curve; these vehicles are not particularly aerodynamic.

I don't care about my mileage since after my company reimburses me for my gas at work I normally have enough left over to pay for my personal driving.:biggrin2:

I was averaging about 16.5 MPG after putting 285 tires on my 2002. I got a scanguageII so I could watch my fuel to air ratios and MPG per trip.

In September, I installed an Injen CAI which uses the new dry Amsoil filters and replaced my Flowmaster muffler with a Borla XR-1. My average weekly mileage is around 18.5+ now.

My daily drive to work is close to 40 miles round trip which is about 50/50 city/highway with speeds averaging from 35 to 65 mph. The week before last I drove 306 miles and it used 16.9 gallons (had to work 7 days that week).
So, that tank averaged only 18.1 but on Saturday and Sunday the Balloon Fiesta started so I was idling at an intersection both mornings due to the traffic for around 30 minutes.

I also used to drive with Overdrive plus ECT on all the time. Thanks to the Scanguage I've learned that you don't get the best gas mileage driving with Overdrive on full time. I've been turning off the Overdrive when just city type driving and for my very long uphill drive going home.

Also, I have a long downhill stretch of about 5.5 miles where I can drive around 65 mph when there are no cops around. I've found that I can get about 3-4 mpg more by turning the OD off and use the engine breaking going down the long stretch. Coasting in OD gets me ~22 mpg where turning off OD gets me up to 28 mpg.

It seems the 3.4 engines are more efficient at slightly higher REVs than lugging them with Overdrive on full time.

I have to disagree, but I do have 5 gears, but my 4th is a 1:1 ratio and my 5 is an overdrive gear, but I find that if I ride at 60mph I can pull off about 23-25mpg with the windows up and no heat or AC, for an extended period of time. I did this for a 200mile period which has a number of hills, but no traffic, I think it was 24.XXmpg after the trip ended, if I were to have taken my vehicle out of 5th/overdrive at 60mph and into 4th/1:1 on the downhills without a doubt would have lost mpg considering the motor is using more fuel in 4th than in 5th as I can use the extra momentum gained from not engine braking to go further without requiring throttle to sustain speed once the land levels out again for good bit of the stretch. That being said if it is a steep downhill that runs for a few miles then I will go into 4th as I would prefer to not heat up the brakes and ride them down the whole hill.

my 98 SR5 (V6 2wd) all stock aside from the stereo, rolling on 235/75 r15s. 14 gallons is the most Ive ever topped off with. Im usually between 300 and 320 miles when the light comes on and usually takes 11 to 12 gallons to top off. I just bought it a month ago. since i bought it I have flushed the rear diff, flushed the trans, flushed coolant, changed oil twice (wasnt sure of maintenance habbits before I bought it), front brake job, rear brake clean and adjust, new air filter, new spark plugs, and a fuel injection service. Im putting new wheels on it today, Im getting a brand new set of take off 16" 2011 tacoma steel wheels with brand new 245/75 r 16 dunlops for $300. the tacoma wheels only have 8 miles on them and its all 4 wheels and tires with the spare, for $300 I couldnt say no, Im hoping the slightly taller tire will help the mileage
