Gas Mileage...

So I know these days it's a pretty sore subject. I bought a used 2000 Limited (v6 4x4) four days ago. I've driven a couple hundred miles and put some gas in it... after my most recent fill up I hit the trip odometer just for fun... so far I've gone 80 miles and i'm down to a half a tank. This is really disappointing considering I love this vehicle and that is just absurd. Can anyone shed any light on what may be happening? Is it possible that the gauge is just bad or maybe it's something else altogether, any help would be great. Thanks.



Edit: Yes, it's been in 2 wheel the whole time...

Lots of things to check for bad gas mileage!

Questions worth asking/answering:
#1: What grade of gas?
#2: What type of driving? urban/suburban/highway.
#3: What style of driving? Grandma or the Dukes of hazzard


#1: air filter
#2: fuel filter
#3: spark plugs
#4: O2 sensors
#5: fuel leaks?!
#6: Brakes (if a caliper is seized... not only would it make a bad noise and pull you in a certain direction but it would cost you mileage for sure until the pad wore away)


Good luck? I'm not sure about the fuel gauges on the 00' t4r's but my 06' is spot on.
 
Gas miles

Well it looks like I'm not the onlyone with the same problem, I like very much my 4r but I have'nt seen 250 miles on my tach,I already change (plugs,air filter,fuel filter,cables,check for O2sensor resistance,Idler speed control,timing,even clean injectors, T boby,I boght the grill tech air(waste of money).So I never have a 4runner before usually I fix problem right away but this time for me to ask you guys for advise cause you already owns one.

The gas is very poor,I drive normally fast but I try not this time that the gas is very high, On the city I get 11MPG on hightway about 16MPG.

Does anyone know about this or there is something that I have not checked.

I had the irginal 275-7016, Thinknig of the samething and I bought a newones, 285-6017 but the same ratio and everything,answer to to question 40psi on newones and 35 on 275 ones, I have the same gas problem on both.

after filling up a few times I realized it was the gauge, not the mileage. The mileage isn't great but it's around 15 for mostly city driving. I have 265 70 16 at I believe 34 but i'd have to go check again... I took the runner into toyota to have the sending unit replaced, I dropped it off at 10 am and picked it up around 4:30... drove off... got home and looked under the truck (I ignored the smell of gasoline the whole way home) and fuel was dripping off the framerail... I almost drove through there f-ing service department, went in and flipped out on them. I left the truck overnight and they promised to fix it "first thing in the morning" I drove off in my toyota matrix loaner car, picked it up in the morning when I was told the technician hokked the fuel lines up backwards. So... that wasn't the most impressive display of their competance... anyway moral of the story is if yor gauge is funky and you have a warranty... take it in. (and pray for the best)

How many miles are on this vehicle? Looks like you've pretty much checked everything. If there are a bunch of miles maybe you could have a compression check done just to make sure things are where they are supossed to be. I wouldn't know what else to do as you've done about everthing.

It took 16 gallons at 240miles on the odometer, 1998 4runner limited. Not a 4x4,3.4 L.

With a 1998 SR5 4x4 with 125K miles, I get 22/23 highway and 17/18 city. Mileage has been consistent since first day. Keep tires properly inflated.
