Gas mileage

Just did my first half of our trip to CA for Granddaughters first birthday.
Mileage was 18.9 at one point, but then a headwind interfered.
After 500 miles the avg is 17.8.

Even a mild headwind will kill my mileage. In my experience, my MPGs going through mountain passes usually surpass my mileage on 70+mph highways due to the slower speeds (50-65). Headwind is still the biggest MPG killer for me on the highway (less common in the mtns). Likewise, a nice tailwind on that same 70+MPH highway and I've peaked at 27mph over a 100 mile stretch.

Once I went to heavier tires, my mpg dropped to around 15 in town, and I'm lucky to get 20-21 on the highway sticking around 60-65 mph.

I’ve been getting the equivalent of 11-13 mpg around town, this includes warming it up and using 4hi often since its winter. Not sure about highway milage, probably around 15 - 18 mpg.

The town milage should be much better once we get some warm weather. Feels like my old Sierra with the 5.3 was better on fuel.

I have a theory: around here, gas typically has up to 10% ethanol. I know I’ve experienced mpg increases with other vehicles in the past whenever I filled with straight gasoline. Covid has diverted lots of ethanol to sanitizers and such. So I wonder if they’re selling straight gas at the moment due to ethanol’s scarcity or increased price. Anybody know?

No to the straight gas, but ethanol varies from time of year and your actual location. They have asstons of it, don't worry.

The most I got from low rolling resistance snow tires was about 19.1, so I'm stunned at your numbers.

Yeah, last year it hovered around 21.8, dipped down around 20.5 in the winter, and I purposely drove gently. Not so much this year. I’m at 50k miles on the original Bridgestone street tires. I’m not complaining, you understand. I just don’t know why it’s improving like this.

Summer gas has less E. Mine goes up 1-2 MPG in the summer too.

Noticed my new 5th gen only gets ~14-15 mpg on routine driving country roads 40-50mph. Still 20mpg highway, but 14-15 is what I'd get on the same trips in my 4th gen V8 "gas guzzler!"

How new? Might still be breaking in.

Also, try locking it in 4th at that speed and see if it doesn't make a difference. Agree with the post above that 5th at that speed is turning the engine a bit slow.

My wife will tell you I am a notoriously slow driver.,but , I am also using the stock bridgestone HT's at 36psi and i get 20-24mpg like someone else posted.

I was getting 15-17mpg in the city. 20-23mpg on the highway. Anything above 65mph, quickly diminishes any mpg.

Respectfully...complaining about the gas mileage on a heavy suv that most likely will get loaded down with heavy accessories is somewhat akin to a Ferrari owner complaining about the cost of tires. Doesn't make much sense

I'm pleased that even though my TRD ORP is larger and approx. 1k lbs heavier than the 3rd gen I had, they get pretty much the same MPG.

In many ways I agree with the "4Runner isn't a prius" posts.
If a Prius did the job for me I still wouldn't be driving one.
But I like to spend my money on other things beside gas.
I've driven my 4R for 100,000+ miles. I've averaged 21MPG and the average cost per gallon over that time has worked out to $3.19.

$15,190 on gas!
If I got a crappy 15mpg I would've spent $21,267.
$6,000 will buy a lot of beer.
