Gas Mileage

I've been having a problem with this....when i first bought the truck i would get an avg of 17.7 mpg all the time and i even got as much as 405 miles on a full tank...when i would fill up the range would reset to 374 miles and then work itself to about 400 as i would drive....winter time came in and my mpg would go nuts...went as low at 10 mpg and when i would fill up the range would reset to 302 miles...one day recently i pulled the 2 EFI fuses and the ETCS fuse for about 5 mins then put them back in..at start after this it putted and shut off..restarted it and fired right up...drove to my girlfriends in delaware..all highway...now my mpg reads 18.5 to 17.1...i heard it resets some stuff that gets confused and will mess with the mileage and by doing this the truck relearns the way you drive..but im still not getting that 400 miles but it is close and when i fill up my range still resets to 302....now i do top off my tank...is that bad? am i doing anything wrong? what can i do to get my mileage back?

Thanks to whoever can help me with this!!

Winter MPGs: Because of winter-grade fuel, expect milage to drop. The drop you experienced is a little much, but nevertheless, expect a drop. With my cars/trucks, I've noticed 2-4mpg decrease

Current MPSs: Where do you usually drive your truck everyday?? Mostly city?? Our runner is getting about 19-20mpg (mixed driving). Highway, going 65mpg, I get about 24-26mpg (which is pretty nuts).....I used to have a 1997 Grand Cherokee and it would constantly get 13.8mpg (I'm glad I got rid of it). How "heavy" is your foot?

Topping off: I do it constantly. I would think it's not good, can't explain why. Bad habit.

Look for: check what gas you are putting in. Sometimes getting bad gas can wreck milage. EVERY-now-and-again I would tank up on some gas from Giant grocery store...........absolute garbage!!! I don't recommend it. I use BP or Shell (I've had good luck with Wawa gas)...........take a look at your spark plugs, have they been changed at the 30K mile interval??.......check tire pressure. Some inflate their tires to 36psi. Mine are at 34psi.

Why do you have 1000K hids?? I was looking to get HIDs, but less than 4K (I want to be as close to "stock" HID lights).......how are they working out for ya? Cops bust your b***s at all?

Anyway, hope this helps

The reason it's 'bad' is: On some vehicles topping off doesn't leave adequate room for expansion and the fuel can 'flood' the vapor recovery system. A flooded vapor recovery can cause a CEL light and cost real money to fix. Overall it's a bad habit but the 4th Gen T4R seems tolerant of topping off.

As for the max mileage displayed at toppoff: Sometimes I'll fill a tank or two from half a tank or even more. That seems to bring the total range miles way down. To see the over 400 I have to fill 3-4 tanks from around 1/4 (or less) which is hard for me. The Boyscout in me doesn't like to have much less than 1/2 tank. I typically refill at a couple of needles thickness below 1/2 and display 37x-38x until empty. It always seems to self correct by the time I get to 1/4 tank. If I add the tripmeter to the available range (once below a half-tank) it usually shows 440-460 total.

Bottom line is there seems to be reasonable accuracy when the fuel tank gets near a 1/4 which is when I want it accurate. I don't much care when it's near full:D

Do you know the ethanol content on the gas you used? I can reach 20 mpg on 0% ethanol, but E10 gives me 18 - 19 mpg on the highway. If you bought it anywhere near the city it will be E10. Right now I am getting 12.9 mpg, but I'm averaging 12 mph.

Good to see some East PA people here. I'm from Narberth but I'm stuck in Pittsburgh for school.

Narberth, Havertown? Wow you guys are practically next door to me.

CJ3Flyer: thanks for the topping off info....... Didn't know I could damage something.... Well that ends my topping off days!:wow2:

My driving is pretty mixed of highway and suburbs...i do like 70-75 on
the highway but I don't floor it from stop sign to stop sign....I really appriciate
all this info...as for the 10000k..I love them I also have 3000k in my
fogs which is also amazing.....cops do not bother me at all and they
are bright..I also the 10000k in my camaro ss and I don't get
bothered...nice to see some local people on here

Do you reset the on-board at each fill-up? That's one way to get a better RELATIVE representation of your mileage. Hand calculating is more accurate.

+1 on ethanol content playing a major role these days in fuel mileage. For 2 yeras I was driving round trip on the exact same 400 mile one-way stretch of road every 2 weeks. Even with stopping at the same gas stations and setting the cruise control at the same speed from start to finish, my mileage would sometimes vary by as much as 4 MPG.

Going that fast, sure, your milage will and does suffer. Getting the 17-18mpgs you say your are getting is actually pretty good.

This is great advice.........when you don't reset the mpgs at each fill up, then take what the display says with a grain of salt!

My V6's fuel mileage begins to drop-off substantially above 1800 RPM.

Actually, I take the on-board with a grain of salt even though I reset it at each fill-up. Typically, most on-boards are off by roughly 2 MPG to the conservative side (indicate better fuel mileage than you actually get). There are a few that are close but that seems to be rare, no matter what make/model car you have. That's why I always hand calculate and then average each month, taking into consideration those skewed data points due to towing my boat.

i've been calculating my mpg recently since i moved and now i have to drive the 4runner everyday instead of weekends only. I've been getting 17.6 mpg. The lift with bigger tires affected my mpg big time.
